Almost three years ago, Ken Levine gave everyone a first glimpse of Judas, the new game he’s been working on after BioShock Infinite. While players have pointed out that Judas looks similar to the BioShock series, Levine says it’s actually “the biggest radical departure” he’s made creatively since the very first BioShock game.
I was listening to Ken Levine on MrMattyPlays’ YouTube show, and he was talking about how Judas compares to BioShock. He said that while some parts feel similar, there are also huge differences. You’ll notice you’ve got a gun in one hand and powers in the other, like in BioShock, but they’ve added a hacking mechanic they haven’t shown much of yet. But he really emphasized that how the game *works* – how it’s built, how you form relationships, and even just how the world looks and how you experience encounters – is completely new. He said it’s the biggest change they’ve made since the original BioShock. It sounds really exciting!
The game centers around Judas, the main character, who is stuck on a massive spaceship named the Mayflower. This ship is home to the last people left in humanity, and their future could depend on three key figures aboard. It’s up to Judas to choose whether to build relationships with these individuals or push them away, and those choices will likely determine everyone’s fate.
In the interview, Levine explained his new story engine as basically “narrative Legos” – which is a cool way of saying it lets important story events happen at different points depending on the choices I make as a player. He also said he’s really trusting players to figure things out, and he’s even okay with us missing some stuff if we go down a different path. It sounds like he wants us to really shape the story ourselves, and that’s awesome! More details here.
I was so relieved to hear Levine say earlier this summer that Judas is going to focus on being a great single-player game. He really emphasized they’re steering clear of things like live-service stuff and other big trends right now, which is awesome! He also showed us a bit of how we’ll build relationships – and maybe rivalries – with the three main characters in the game. It sounds like your choices will really matter when it comes to making friends and enemies.
Judas doesn’t currently have a release date.
