At Sundance, Josh O’Connor attended the EbMaster Studio, hosted by Audible, where he talked about his upcoming film “Rebuilding.” Accompanying him were writer-director Max Walker-Silverman, along with co-stars Meghann Fahy, Lily LaTorre, and Kali Reis. The movie revolves around a character played by O’Connor, who is a cowboy forced to live in a FEMA camp after his Colorado ranch is destroyed by a wildfire. Interestingly, O’Connor began working on perfecting his midwestern accent during his first meeting with Walker-Silverman over Zoom.
Before the shooting began,” O’Connor shared with Brent Lang from EbMaster’s, “I spent a short while there. It wasn’t long, but enough to catch some of the surrounding sounds.
Max Walker-Silverman mentioned that we spent some time searching YouTube for individuals from specific regions of Colorado. Initially, I didn’t receive any response. I thought it would be positive. The first WhatsApp voice message I received from him left an unforgettable, wonderful impression.”

Max’s movie is stunning, not just because it features professional actors who are truly exceptional, but also because it includes local, non-professional actors. There are friends of Max’s from his hometown and a diverse group of people who contributed to the creation of the film. The spirit of community is woven into both the production and the narrative of the movie.
He mentioned that he adopted an accent unrelated to his character while working closely with the local actors. Being together constantly, we influenced each other. This close interaction aided in making the accent feel more natural and familiar.
