Josh Hutcherson Was Asked If He’s Ready To Reclaim His Title As Internet Boyfriend, And His Response Was A+

Many people who grew up in the late 2000s likely had a crush on Josh Hutcherson. He was a popular early celebrity crush thanks to family-friendly movies like Zathura, Bridge to Terebithia, and Journey to the Center of the Earth, and later, The Hunger Games. Now 33, the actor is starring in the upcoming HBO comedy I Love LA, and when asked about being considered an “internet boyfriend,” his answer was fantastic.

In the new HBO show, Kyle Hutcherson plays the boyfriend of the lead character, Maia, portrayed by Rachel Sennott, who also created and stars in the series. Sennott previously starred in the 2023 film Bottoms. Here’s what Hutcherson had to say when Bustle asked him if he was prepared to be known as the internet’s boyfriend again.

I had no idea anyone even considered me for that position, but okay, I’ll accept it. I’m just not sure what the job actually involves or what I’m supposed to do.

Hutcherson laughed and said he didn’t even know he’d been called an “internet boyfriend.” This term generally refers to a celebrity that many people online admire and develop strong crushes on. Pedro Pascal is a recent example, but there are plenty of others now, like Jeremy Allen White from The Bear, Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton (who was just named “sexiest man alive”), and many of Daisy Edgar Jones’ former colleagues.

When Hutcherson was asked the question, he was sitting with his I Love LA co-star, Leighton Meester. Here’s what they said to each other:

  • Leighton: You just have to be faithful to everyone on the internet for the rest of your life.”
  • Josh: “All right. Done. Easy.”

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. You can watch new episodes of I Love LA weekly, and with a subscription, you’ll have access to a huge library of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.

As a total film and TV fan, I think Meester really gets it. Her husband, Adam Brody, went through the same thing – being everyone’s crush back in the early 2000s! It sounds like Hutcherson is totally up for this role, and honestly, if I Love LA takes off, I can already picture all the fan edits of his scenes popping up everywhere. It’s just how things go!

The new HBO comedy I Love LA centers around Maia, a driven young woman hoping to make it as a talent manager. Her friendship with Tallulah, a friend from college, is put to the test when Tallulah unexpectedly reappears. Critics are enjoying the show – it currently has an 83% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes – but it remains to be seen if it will become as popular with viewers as other HBO hits like The White Lotus and Euphoria. You can catch new episodes of I Love LA on Sundays on HBO.
