Josh Hutcherson is currently enjoying a career resurgence with recent projects like the upcoming horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, The Beekeeper, and the HBO series I Love L.A. However, he admits the years immediately following the Hunger Games films were challenging. In a recent interview, Hutcherson shared how, after ten years of consistent work, he suddenly found himself unable to find new roles. He described the transition from being constantly employed to having no work as surprisingly difficult.
On a recent episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s show, Dinner’s On Me, Josh Hutcherson, who played Peeta in The Hunger Games, shared that he was raised working all the time. He thought landing the role in The Hunger Games would finally provide long-term security. But when the franchise ended unexpectedly, he realized he hadn’t developed the skills to cope with failure. He explained:
I never experienced failure or rejection early in my career. From age nine to twenty-four, everything I did was successful. Then, after the Hunger Games movies – which really launched my career – I entered a complicated industry. It’s a tricky world because you can quickly be put on a pedestal. Suddenly, you’re working with huge stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and you’re a prominent part of a blockbuster film, making it seem like you’ve ‘arrived.’
You know, the guy from Zathura—he told me it wasn’t a slow fade-out at all. It wasn’t like things gradually slowed down. One minute he was ‘the next big thing,’ and the next… nothing. Hollywood just moved on to the next ‘next big thing,’ leaving him completely on his own to figure out what to do and if he even had a future in this business. He went on to say…
It’s strange – people are eager to celebrate you publicly, but hesitant to offer real support. I experienced my first real feelings of disappointment, failure, and rejection around the age of 24 or 25. It was a complicated situation.
After that initial success, the voice actor for Ultraman explained that he went through a long period with very little work. He continued to audition and try to find new roles, but opportunities became scarce. Having worked steadily since childhood, the lack of work was unsettling, as Hutcherson shared.
As an actor, it was a really jarring experience to suddenly face constant rejection – audition after audition with nothing coming of it. For years, since I was a kid, I’d always booked the jobs I went out for, or at least, that was my expectation. I figured if I was even reading for something, I had a good shot. It was a shock to realize that’s just not how things work – the industry is much more competitive than I’d ever known, and you can’t take getting cast for granted.
Josh Hutcherson is working consistently again, but he remembers the important lesson he learned during a difficult time. He recently shared that he’d eagerly return to the Hunger Games movies if asked – not because he’s feeling nostalgic, but because he truly cares about the people he worked with on what was a defining part of his career.

As a film lover, what really struck me about his story is how relatable it is for so many actors. Except, Josh Hutcherson didn’t just experience that struggle – he lived it, having been the face of a massive book-turned-movie franchise. It’s a powerful reminder that even huge success doesn’t last forever, and getting back on your feet takes real grit, patience, and being okay with starting small.
Josh Hutcherson’s latest film, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, came out in theaters on December 5th. You can find showtimes at your local cinema. He also stars in the series I Love L.A., which you can stream with an HBO Max subscription.
