Actor Josh Duhamel disagrees with celebrities who publicly share their political opinions. He believes an actor’s main job is to create entertaining content and suggests other Hollywood stars should avoid discussing politics.
Actor Duhamel recently appeared on Megyn Kelly’s podcast and discussed politics. While he admitted to having strong political views, he intentionally avoided sharing them. He explained that he doesn’t want to alienate fans by taking a public stance on controversial topics, and believes celebrities should generally avoid political commentary unless they’re actively campaigning for office.
Actors Are Just Here to “Make Cool Stuff”
I have strong beliefs, but I generally avoid discussing them publicly. I don’t want to risk losing half of my audience, and I respect their differing opinions. I’m not interested in telling people what to think; I just want to create entertaining work, as seen in Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.”
He explained that if success is the goal, alienating half of your audience with your personal beliefs doesn’t make sense, although some people might not care. From his perspective, it’s a simple business choice: he’s focused on creating entertaining movies and TV shows. He sees himself as an entertainer, not a politician, and if he wanted to share his political views, he’d run for office – which he has no intention of doing.
Other Stars Are Refusing to Talk Politics
Alana Duhamel is the newest Hollywood star to steer clear of political discussions in interviews. Like Sydney Sweeney, who declined to share her political views in GQ following last year’s controversy, Duhamel is avoiding the topic. Jennifer Lawrence, who once openly criticized Donald Trump, has also become more hesitant to discuss her political beliefs publicly.
During an interview with The New York Times’ The Interview podcast last November, Lawrence admitted she wasn’t sure if she should have publicly spoken up. She described the first Trump administration as chaotic, saying she felt panicked and overwhelmed trying to respond to everything that was happening.
She continued, saying that experience has shown celebrity endorsements don’t actually change how people vote. She questioned why she was even speaking out, feeling her opinion would only worsen the country’s deep divisions and contribute to an already heated and contentious environment.
Bill Maher, a political commentator and comedian, also shared his thoughts on the issue in a January interview with the California Post. He argued, in strong terms, that celebrities might be doing more harm than good with their involvement.
Bill Maher believes Hollywood is a major hub for progressive activism, and he doesn’t think celebrities are benefiting the Democratic Party. He argues that to win future elections, Democrats need to ask celebrities to be quiet, as many Americans don’t see them as practical or relatable.
