Coming just a year after he played Gurney Halleck in Dune, this original series is arguably even more puzzling than Frank Herbert’s novel. It’s a unique blend of the western drama Yellowstone and the classic anthology series The Twilight Zone, making it a great choice for a weekend binge.

Created by Brian Watkins and released in 2022, the series stars Josh Brolin alongside other familiar faces like Lewis Pullman and Imogen Poots. Think of it as Yellowstone with a seriously strange twist. Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a rancher trying to protect his land, but things get weird when he finds a mysterious black hole on his property. The show’s premise centers around his struggle for survival after this discovery.
Outer Range tells the story of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a Wyoming rancher doing everything he can to protect his family and land. He stumbles upon a strange and impossible mystery in the wild countryside. This gripping series blends the drama of a Western family saga with a touch of dark humor and a supernatural puzzle, exploring how people deal with things they can’t explain.
This series has fifteen episodes spread across two seasons, making it perfect for a weekend binge. The first season received a respectable 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the second season, which premiered in May 2024, really impressed critics with a 92% rating. Viewers generally agreed, giving the first season a 69% rating and the second an 84%. One viewer praised it as an “underrated series” that successfully blends a strong cast, modern western themes, unexpected plot twists, excellent writing, and science fiction. Be warned: if you get hooked on Outer Range, you won’t get a neat and tidy conclusion. Although the show received better reviews in its second season, Prime Video unexpectedly canceled it in 2024. The final episode of Season 2 did resolve some plot threads, but, true to many good science fiction shows, it left fans with plenty of unanswered questions.

Prime Video never officially explained why they cancelled Outer Range. Many think the show was simply too expensive to produce. Others suggest it didn’t attract enough viewers compared to Prime Video’s other popular series. Sadly, it looks unlikely that Outer Range will return.
