Just because a comic book movie isn’t successful doesn’t mean the character itself will become unpopular. A great example is Jonah Hex, whose 2010 film failed, but he’s still a fan favorite among DC Comics’ Western heroes.
Jonah Hex is coming back to DC Comics! The publisher plans to relaunch the character as part of its new ‘Next Level’ line of books, which will launch in 2026.
Comic book writer Scott Snyder recently shared a year-end blog post, looking back at his accomplishments over the last 12 months and teasing exciting upcoming projects, including new titles under the Next Level banner.
Snyder is particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming Jonah Hex series, calling it a project he’s eager for fans to experience. This will be the first comic book focused on the disfigured anti-hero since the 2011-2014 run of All-Star Western.
A year earlier, the former Confederate soldier who became a ruthless bounty hunter first appeared on the big screen in a movie named after himself. The film, directed by Jimmy Hayward, also starred Megan Fox as his love interest, Lilah Black, and Academy Award nominee John Malkovich as the villain, Quentin Turnbull. Unfortunately, it wasn’t successful with critics or audiences, earning only $11 million despite costing $47 million to make, and receiving a low 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie faced criticism from comic book fans because it gave the character Jonah Hex the power to bring people back to life – a power he’s never had in the comics. Created in 1972 by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga in All-Star Western #10, Hex has always been a tough, intimidating figure, leading some to mistakenly believe he’s immortal, but he’s never been portrayed as having supernatural abilities.
The lineup will also feature returning titles with popular characters like Lobo (written by Skottie Young, art by Jorge Coron), Batwoman (from the character’s creator, Greg Rucka), and Deathstroke: The Terminator (by Tony Fleecs and Carmine Di Giandomenico). The creative team for the new Jonah Hex series hasn’t been announced yet.
Jonah Hex Was Redeemed In The Arrowverse
Many consider Jonah Hex to be a critical failure, so the fact that people are still interested in the character and his comics is surprising. The upcoming ‘Next Level’ comic might be due to the popularity of the Arrowverse, which has kept the character relevant.
Six years after their adventure in the Old West, featured in “The Magnificent Eight,” the team encountered a bounty hunter. This marked the first of several appearances by the character, played by Johnathon Schaech, who is also known for his role in the movie That Thing You Do!
Jonah Hex was much more popular when portrayed by Schaech in the Arrowverse TV series than he was in the movie version – a difference Josh Brolin likely didn’t mind. Brolin found greater success playing other comic book characters, notably Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cable in Deadpool 2.
Let’s hope the new Jonah Hex comics for DC’s Next Level are more successful than his movie. While there’s no firm release date, they’re expected to be published around 2026.
Jonah Hex is available to stream on HBO Max.
