As a long-time fan and admirer of Jon Stewart, I’ve always appreciated his unique blend of humor, intellect, and social commentary. His latest critique of the media’s sensationalism regarding Donald Trump’s presidency resonates deeply with me.
Jon Stewart, in a recent installment of his “Weekly Podcast” (reported by The Daily Beast), voiced his concern over the media’s tendency to instill fear among Americans regarding a potential second term for Donald Trump as President, well before such an event has actually occurred.
The host of ‘The Daily Show’ expressed that America is currently in a time of uncertainty, questioning if the ground beneath us remains stable. He also pointed out that the media, in its fervor, is amplifying anxiety by believing they are like the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote, with the latter having already fallen off a cliff. The analogy suggests that we’ve only just realized there’s nothing supporting us, and now we find ourselves plummeting towards danger.
Stewart expressed uncertainty about the future when Donald Trump becomes president, advising Americans to stay prepared for various scenarios. However, he also cautioned against excessive fear or anxiety at this early stage.
Stewart frequently criticizes the media for their approach towards reporting on Trump. During Trump’s hush money trial in April, he strongly criticized the media for focusing on trivial aspects of the trial as if they were groundbreaking news. He urged journalists to confine their coverage to the key issues and avoid turning even the most ordinary details into a sensational spectacle.
Stewart inquired, “What on earth are we focusing on here?” He pointed out that during this trial, something significant and enlightening is bound to occur. However, due to our attention being diverted by his analysis of the defendant’s minor facial expressions, we might miss it. If the media tries to sensationalize trivial matters, we won’t take them seriously when something truly intriguing happens. It’s a case of ‘The boy who cried wolf… Blitzer.’
Towards the close of October, after Trump’s contentious gathering at Madison Square Garden, where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a polarizing jest about Puerto Rico, Stewart advised the media against overemphasizing the joke and thereby neglecting Trump himself.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Stewart expressed his concern about the media’s preoccupation with humorous remarks, instead of focusing on Trump and his potential power. Specifically, he pointed out Trump’s comment about deporting everyone, referencing the law used during World War II to intern Japanese people as an example.
