Jon Stewart Decries Trump’s War in Iran

Jon Stewart uses his platform on The Daily Show each Monday to address current events, and recently he focused on the new conflict between America, Israel, and Iran. He revived a segment called “Mess O’Potamia: America’s Next Top Muddle,” which he’s used on and off for twenty years. He even joked that the reference to the show America’s Next Top Model was surprisingly timely.

As a huge movie buff, I was really struck by Jon Stewart’s recent take on things. He was rightfully angry about how quickly some on the right switched gears regarding Trump. They used to tout him as someone who’d achieve “peace through strength,” but now it feels like it’s “peace through war,” and we’re all just caught up in it. It’s scary because there doesn’t seem to be any real plan or end goal, just whatever Trump decides. He even showed a clip of Trump just rambling, and it led him to make this killer point: it’s unbelievable that our military technology is more reliable than the person in charge of it.

Stewart criticized Trump’s military action, pointing out it was taken without approval from Congress, which he sees as a pattern for the Trump presidency. He expressed frustration that Congress is only planning to vote on a War Powers Resolution after the action has already taken place, comparing it to a belated and ineffective attempt to enforce rules. He sarcastically questioned the purpose of Congress, suggesting it’s largely ineffective and doesn’t adequately check presidential power.

Jon Stewart criticized the attempt to kill Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, sarcastically suggesting the U.S. could have simply waited for natural causes. He also condemned the escalating conflict, pointing out the logic of Iran retaliating against everyone after being attacked by America and Israel. He compared it to a poor strategy in a fight – making things worse by hitting everyone around you. There’s concern that Stewart’s commentary might be frowned upon by his employer, Paramount, given its ties to Donald Trump.
