Okay, so it sounds like Johnny Depp is very close to officially becoming Ebenezer Scrooge! Reports are coming in that he’s in final talks for the role in a new take on A Christmas Carol being directed by Ti West, who you might know from horror films. Apparently, this isn’t your typical heartwarming Dickens adaptation – West is known for a different vibe. The script is by Nathaniel Halpern, the creator of Tales From the Loop, and Andrea Riseborough is also joining the cast. If everything goes through, Paramount is hoping to release the film just in time for the holidays – November 13th, 2026, to be exact. Given Depp’s reputation, getting this deal finalized might take a little time, but it’s looking promising!
After a 2018 court decision sided with a British newspaper that labeled him an abuser based on allegations from his ex-wife, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp faced a significant decline in film roles. Although he won a 2022 defamation trial against Heard – with the court finding both parties had defamed each other – he hasn’t yet appeared in a major studio film. However, Depp is gradually returning to acting, having recently finished filming the thriller Day Drinker with Penélope Cruz, scheduled for release in 2026. Whether A Christmas Carol will be considered part of his career resurgence remains to be seen.
Johnny Depp should be aware of the growing number of Christmas movies in the works. While there’s always competition from general holiday films, news recently surfaced that director Robert Eggers is creating his own version of A Christmas Carol, and has already cast a lead actor as Ebenezer Scrooge. Depp’s team needs to decide if this new film will be a friendly rival or a competitor, potentially with actor Willem Dafoe.
