John Williams, the famous composer, will once again collaborate with director Steven Spielberg on his next film. Universal Pictures plans to release the movie in theaters on June 12, 2026. While details are scarce, the project is a science-fiction story said to involve UFOs.
At a recent event at the Julliard School celebrating the life and work of John Williams, the school’s president, Damian Woetzel, shared that Williams is currently collaborating with Steven Spielberg in Los Angeles on an upcoming film. The information was originally reported by journalist Doug Adams.
This marks the 30th film that John Williams has composed the score for, directed by Steven Spielberg. Their long partnership includes iconic science fiction movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), and War of the Worlds (2005).
John Williams, age 93, most recently composed the score for Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), the first film in the series Spielberg didn’t direct, though he remained an executive producer. He also wrote the music for Spielberg’s previous film, The Fabelmans (2022).
So, there was a lot of talk about Harrison Ford retiring after Dial of Destiny. He initially hinted it would be his last Indiana Jones film, but he walked that back in 2023. Basically, he said he doesn’t like making definitive statements, especially ones that completely close off possibilities. He clarified that if a really compelling project came along, he’d absolutely be open to returning – he essentially took back his retirement announcement, saying he never intended it to be a hard and fast rule.
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the partnership of John Williams and Steven Spielberg. They’ve worked together so often over the years, and they’re clearly close friends, so it feels fitting that Spielberg’s latest film is the one bringing Williams back to composing a full movie score. It just feels right!
John Williams isn’t the only familiar face Steven Spielberg is bringing onto his 2026 film. David Koepp, who wrote the script, is also rejoining Spielberg after their previous collaborations on movies like Jurassic Park, The Lost World, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Spielberg developed the story for the new project.
Emily Blunt, Wyatt Russell, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Noah Robbins star in the upcoming movie. Filming has already been completed, according to director Koepp.
Collaborating once more with John Williams and David Koepp, and choosing science fiction as the genre, feels like a return to the style of classic Steven Spielberg films. Even though the movie doesn’t have a title or a revealed plot yet, it’s already generating huge excitement and is expected to be a major hit when it arrives in theaters in 2026.
