Even twenty years after its release, the teen comedy John Tucker Must Die is finding a new audience on streaming platforms, showing that people still enjoy over-the-top teen stories. While the movie did well when it first came out, it’s now often seen as a flawed revenge fantasy that doesn’t really reflect what being a teenager is like. Despite its problems, many viewers still secretly enjoy it as a bit of a guilty pleasure.
Despite its flaws, John Tucker Must Die remains popular thanks to a handful of genuinely funny scenes, particularly for those who remember watching it as teenagers in the 2000s. However, the movie’s main plot isn’t very strong and never really made a lasting impression.
John Tucker Must Die Is Everything Wrong With Teen Movies
The movie John Tucker Must Die is loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. It follows three high school girls who discover they’ve all been dating the same guy – a popular student who deliberately targets girls from different social groups. After a quiet girl named Kate points out they’re fighting amongst themselves instead of focusing on the guy who hurt them, they team up with her to get revenge on John and ruin his reputation.
The idea behind this story had promise – it could have explored the damaging expectations placed on high school students in relationships. However, it ended up feeling awkward and focused on revenge, actually supporting harmful social ideas. For example, right from the start, the characters are reduced to stereotypes, like Beth, the vegan activist, being unfairly labeled as promiscuous simply because of her lifestyle choices.
While John Tucker is presented as the bad guy, the girls’ actions actually support the idea that teen girls can be manipulative and overly focused on boys when dating. Even though Kate points out that the girls are prioritizing John over their own feelings, she still joins the revenge plan after he hurts her, which suggests that boys are often seen as the most important thing in teen girls’ social circles.
Honestly, what bothers me most about the movie is that it never really makes John Tucker account for his actions. He doesn’t actually change, he just admits to dating multiple girls at once – like that fixes anything! And it’s frustrating that even Scott, who’s supposed to be the ‘good guy,’ basically tells the girls they’re overreacting just because everyone knows John’s reputation. It’s like he’s saying John’s behavior is okay because it’s well-known, which is a terrible message.
The movie unfairly blames the girls who are attracted to the main character, implying they should have anticipated his cheating instead of holding him accountable for intentionally hurting multiple people. While many films effectively portray the nuances of teenage relationships and challenge stereotypes, John Tucker Must Die unfortunately reinforces existing social norms rather than breaking them.
Despite aiming to support girls and challenge harmful stereotypes about boys, the movie ultimately reinforces those very ideas about how teenagers behave. It doesn’t feel truly empowering for women because harmful behavior goes unaddressed, and the male character is simply made to look silly rather than facing real consequences for his actions.
This Genre Is Still Far Too Problematic
Some teen movies, like The Edge of Seventeen and Eighth Grade, realistically portray the challenges and social lives of teenagers. However, many popular films, such as John Tucker Must Die, unfortunately reinforce negative stereotypes about teenage life, particularly when it comes to dating and relationships.
Everyone thought John Tucker Must Die would be a groundbreaking movie, a feminist take on high school dating and the way boys often behave badly. It had the potential to be a huge success, but ultimately, it fell into the same old traps as other teen comedies, relying on tired stereotypes instead of delivering on its promising idea.
While John Tucker Must Die is often considered a light and silly teen comedy – and not a particularly good one – its enduring popularity points to a larger issue with the genre. As long as audiences enjoy these predictable and sometimes problematic storylines, similar films will continue to be made, overshadowing more interesting and meaningful stories about teenagers.
