Actor John Lithgow attended the EbMaster Studio event by Audible during Sundance and voiced his thoughts on one of the most notable Oscar oversights this year: Edward Berger, director of “Conclave”, not being nominated for Best Director. Lithgow plays a significant part in the papal storyline of this film. The movie “Conclave” received eight nominations, with Best Picture among them, and there were predictions that Berger would be a certain nominee for Best Director after receiving nominations from the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Directors Guild of America.
Indeed, I felt let down, but that’s just how the game of awards season works,” Lithgow explains. “The competition is fierce and Edward is an exceptional director. We adored him immensely. He was nominated for every other award, and ‘Conclave’ earned eight Oscar nominations. Such recognition usually comes when you have a talented director at the helm. He handles such setbacks gracefully. We are all extremely proud of the movie. My pride is overflowing.”
“Naturally, I was disheartened, but that’s the nature of awards season,” Lithgow remarks. “The competition is tough and Edward is an extraordinary director. We held him in high regard. He was nominated for every other award, and ‘Conclave’ received eight Oscar nominations. Such acclaim typically reflects a skilled director at the helm. He takes it all in stride. We are all incredibly proud of the film, my satisfaction knows no bounds.
This year at Sundance, Lithgow is shining as the lead in the film “Jimpa,” which is jointly penned and helmed by Sophie Hyde. The movie also features Olivia Colman, who recently collaborated with Lithgow in the EbMaster Studio. “Jimpa” revolves around Hannah (Colman) and her nonbinary adolescent, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde), as they embark on a journey to Amsterdam to meet their granddad Jim (Lithgow), who is gay. The story unfolds as Hannah grapples with her feelings towards her child, who wishes to stay and reside with Jim for an entire year.
One striking feature of the show “Jimpa” is its inclusion of full frontal nudity from John Lithgow, who is 79 years old. The actor expresses that nudity serves as a potent device for making an impression. He notes that it’s something we all conceal from others, something private and personal. When one is prepared to reveal this vulnerability for a valid reason in the course of a narrative, there’s no stronger impact.
Lithgow admits he felt quite uncomfortable about being nude for the role. He didn’t take this decision lightly, as it gave him many sleepless nights before the movie was released. In fact, he didn’t inform his wife about his full frontal nudity in the film. They watched the movie together in a private screening room, and interestingly, she didn’t comment on it at all. Remarkably, even after seeing his private parts on screen, she never mentioned it to him.
“Jimpa” is a sales title at Sundance this year.
