John Carpenter’s In the Mouth Of Madness Is Coming To 4K Blu-Ray In Time For Halloween

John Carpenter is widely considered one of the most important directors in horror. He has a long and successful career, with many films achieving cult classic status. Now, one of his less famous movies, In The Mouth of Madness, is being released on a Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray by Arrow Video on October 28. This new release includes fresh cover art and a wealth of bonus features. I recently rewatched In the Mouth of Madness, and it’s still totally mind-bending. Sam Neill plays John Trent, an insurance investigator who’s trying to figure out where a famous horror author went missing. It starts as a pretty standard investigation, but when he ends up in this tiny town, things get *weird*. Seriously, he starts to lose it as the line between what’s real and what’s made up completely blurs, and it feels like the whole world is in danger. It’s actually the last movie in what fans call Carpenter’s unofficial Apocalypse Trilogy – the other two are The Thing and Prince of Darkness. They all deal with these huge, world-ending kinds of themes, which is pretty cool.

The movie draws significant inspiration from the writings of HP Lovecraft, and its title is a nod to his story, At the Mountains of Madness. Although In the Mouth of Madness wasn’t a commercial success initially, critics generally liked it at the time, and it’s since gained recognition as one of Carpenter’s most skillfully made films, thanks to its high production values and self-aware storytelling.

In the Mouth of Madness isn’t the only John Carpenter film receiving a new release this year. Soon, you’ll be able to find collectible 4K Blu-ray steelbook editions of Halloween, Halloween 2, and Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. Each edition boasts new artwork, 4K restorations of the films themselves, and plenty of bonus content. Carpenter not only directed and composed the music for the original Halloween, but he also contributed as a writer, producer, and composer for the two sequels. Additionally, Shout Factory Collector’s Editions of the Halloween films Carpenter worked on are available. These are also 4K Blu-rays, each featuring unique art on both the case and the slipcover.

A 4K Steelbook Edition of John Carpenter’s Vampires will be released on November 4th, priced at $45. Though it’s not considered one of Carpenter’s best films, Vampires is still an enjoyable action movie about vampire hunters and is worth a watch.
