Joan Baez delivered a firm statement concerning American politics during her performance on the debut episode of “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” on Wednesday evening.
Before sharing a tale highlighting Martin Luther King Jr.’s sense of humor, Baez momentarily halted the performance to provide some background about the nature of today’s American leadership.
Baez remarked to Mulaney, “You mentioned I’m free to speak my mind here. This place is for being light-hearted and enjoying ourselves, but let’s not forget that our democracy seems to be crumbling. It appears we’re governed by a group of incompetent billionaires.”
Baez told Mulaney, “You said I could speak freely here, right? Here, we’re meant to relax and have fun, but remember, our democracy seems to be falling apart. It looks like it’s being managed by a bunch of incompetent billionaires.”)
In her remarks, Baez probably meant President Donald Trump and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, who is known for reducing government-funded projects through the Department of Government Efficiency, though she did not explicitly name them.
Later during the broadcast, Baez mentioned that she had briefly owned one of Elon Musk’s Tesla cars following advice from her assistant, but she doesn’t have pleasant memories of this brief period.
Baez expressed disdain for that item, but felt obligated to appreciate it. Despite his feelings, he decided to travel in it. Just 45 minutes later, he had collided it with an oak tree on his land…He was contemplating, ‘That must be a message.’
In the recent James Mangold film “A Complete Unknown,” which is a biopic about Bob Dylan, Monica Barbaro took on the role of Baez. Barbaro and her co-star Timothée Chalamet, who portrayed Bob Dylan, were both recognized for their performances at the 2025 Academy Awards. However, neither of them ended up winning an Oscar.
