I resumed my hosting duties on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” yesterday, having taken a brief hiatus due to the destructive wildfires in the Los Angeles region towards the end of last week. Earlier in the day, we transformed our studio’s parking lot – typically used for live outdoor music performances – into a donation center (which remains active until Friday). During the show, I took a moment to discuss this tragic event.
You’re aware, I suppose, that this past week has been incredibly unsettling, nerve-wracking, and unusual for us here in Los Angeles – our workplace, our homes, and our children’s schools,” Kimmel started off, pointing out that the “JKL” studios had to be evacuated midweek due to their proximity to the fires in Runyon Canyon.
He stated that due to the urgency, a large number of us had to abruptly depart from our residences. Regrettably, some of our work companions have also lost their homes in this ordeal. The situation has been heartbreaking, as almost everyone in this city can relate to knowing someone, and many of us know more than one person – families, friends, acquaintances, neighbors – whose houses were tragically destroyed by fire.
To be honest, it’s uncertain if this ordeal has ended yet. We experienced hurricane-force winds, which made things worse. Regrettably, the strong winds have returned as of tonight.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my feelings when I say this has been an overwhelming, startling, dreadful journey for us all. Yet, amidst the sorrow, it’s been a remarkable experience to witness humanity at its best. In the face of personal losses, people were out there in parking lots, selflessly volunteering to aid their neighbors who were also affected. It’s heartwarming to see such resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
Tonight, I prefer not to delve into the offensive, reckless, and thoughtless comments made by those claiming to be our potential future leader and his associates during a critical and frightening moment. It’s appalling that they targeted firefighters, who, it seems, don’t meet their standards of whiteness while putting their lives on the line for us. This behavior is disgraceful, but unfortunately, not unexpected.
Rather than discussing anything else at this moment, I’d prefer to express my gratitude to these brave souls – they truly deserve it. Let us never forget the importance of our appreciation. The firefighters from Los Angeles were among the first responders, showing incredible courage and determination in battling the fires. This was followed by firefighters from various states such as Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Washington, Northern California, New Mexico, Idaho, and even as far away as Maine. We also have firefighters from Mexico, Canada, and we are immensely thankful for their assistance.
Additionally, I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our police officers, members of the National Guard, rescuers, medical professionals including doctors, nurses, EMTs, and pilots who are tirelessly working around the clock. May heaven bless you all. If you wish to express your appreciation through a donation, consider supporting the Los Angeles Fire Department at their official website: LAFD.org.
As a dedicated follower, I’d like to extend my gratitude to our local news reporters. They have consistently reminded me of the significance of local TV, radio, and print media.
Additionally, Kimmel conducted live interviews with chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken from Border Grill, who were preparing meals for emergency workers, and with actor Steve Guttenberg from “Police Academy,” whose recent comments to the press in Pacific Palisades generated news headlines.
Later on, Kimmel remarked: “Over the past six days in LA, we’ve picked up quite a bit. We figured out every local news reporter’s name. We discovered the existence of a ‘boiling water advisory.’ We realized that Steve Guttenberg is truly a national treasure. Most of us found out how worthless we are during an emergency situation. We learned some new vocabulary, such as “Slopover” and “Phos-chek.” We found out there’s a socially acceptable way to use the word ‘retardant.’ We were unaware of the Bunny Museum in Altadena until now. We came to understand that our relatives from other states can’t tell Santa Monica apart from Santa Clarita. And we concluded that whoever was sending those evacuation notifications needs to find a new job. You see, before this incident, my knowledge about fire safety mainly came from watching Paw Patrol.
On Mondays, I’m privileged to welcome guests like Snoop Dogg (“Missionary”), Roy Wood Jr. (“Roy Wood Jr: Lonely Flowers”), and musical guest Dawes, hailing from Altadena. We extended the invitation to Snoop for three reasons. Firstly, he feels like family to us. Secondly, he embodies Los Angeles in a significant manner. Lastly, he’s remarkably resilient against smoke.
In a spot, Snoop and Kimmel shared a message that “we’re in this together. Stay strong, LA!”:

Jimmy Kimmel Live displayed a sign expressing appreciation for Los Angeles’ first responders outside its Hollywood studio.
Concerning the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” charity center that started today, Jimmy Kimmel shared on Instagram: “Los Angeles residents, if you’re searching for a method to aid those impacted by the fires, we have a donation center on our Hollywood backlot. We will swiftly distribute necessary goods to those in need. Thank you for your support and please share this with neighbors in our community.
Donations will be accepted between noon and 6 p.m. on Friday at 6901 Hawthorn Ave. We are accepting items such as bottled water and Gatorade, baby food, pet food, non-perishable foods like canned goods or individually wrapped snacks (such as bags of pretzels or chips), new toiletries/hygiene products, new socks and underwear, diapers, and baby wipes.
Originally, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show was intended for broadcast on last Wednesday, welcoming guests such as Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Brian Jordan Alvarez (“English Teacher”) and musical performer Victoria Canal; Thursday’s episode was due to present Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”) along with The Lumineers as the musical act.
