Like the film? Then check out the original The Mask comics
The Mask movie was based on a Dark Horse Comics miniseries of the same name. While the film had a humorous and lively tone when Jim Carrey wore the mask, reminiscent of a live-action Looney Tunes cartoon, the original comics were considerably darker and contained excessive violent imagery. Unlike his movie character Stanley Ipkiss, who is a sweet and lovable loser, the comic book version isn’t as endearing. Once he acquires the mask in the comics, he swiftly employs its power to mete out brutal retribution against anyone who wronged him.
- The Mask Omnibus Volume 1 (Paperback) — $23.62 (
$30) - The Mask Omnibus Volume 2 (Paperback) — $30
As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of The Mask, let me share my take on the difference between the movie and comic book versions. While the film did include some intense scenes, they were tamed down compared to the comics. For instance, in the flick, Ipkiss’ mechanics get humiliated by his alter-ego, but in the comics, they meet a much grimmer fate at his hands. In the books, several characters meet a cold-blooded end and things don’t exactly end on a high note for Ipkess either.
If you’re curious about just how wild and violent the original comic can get, check out The Mask Omnibus Edition – now available for only $23.62 (originally $30). After the movie became a massive success, numerous comic books were released by different creative teams. However, if you’re looking for the darkest, grittiest take on The Mask’s tale of power, revenge, and corruption, I’d recommend the original mini-series penned by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke – it’s a chilling exploration of how power can lead to absolute corruption.
