Jim Carrey is potentially involved in a live-action movie based on the classic cartoon *The Jetsons*. Originally created as a futuristic take on *The Flintstones*, *The Jetsons* first aired on ABC in the early 1960s and later had two more seasons in the 1980s. The show followed the everyday adventures of the Jetson family in a retro-futuristic city. Along with other popular Hanna-Barbera cartoons like *The Flintstones, Yogi Bear*, and *Scooby-Doo!*, *The Jetsons* became a significant part of pop culture.
Jim Carrey is potentially starring as George Jetson in a live-action movie based on the classic cartoon, according to *Variety*. *The Wrap* first reported the news. Colin Trevorrow, who directed *Jurassic World*, is expected to direct and write the screenplay with Joe Epstein. While a release date hasn’t been announced, this appears to be Carrey’s next project, with the possible exception of a return for *Sonic the Hedgehog 4*.
It’s Been a Long Road for ‘The Jetsons’

Warner Bros.
Before now, *The Jetsons* only appeared in one theatrical film: 1990’s *Jetsons: The Movie*, which wasn’t successful with critics or at the box office. Interest in a live-action *Jetsons* movie picked up in the mid-2000s after the success of the *Scooby-Doo!* movie, which was based on another classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Over the last two decades, several well-known directors – including Rob Minkoff (*Stuart Little*), Adam Shankman (*Hairspray*), Robert Rodriguez (*Desperado*), and Conrad Vernon (*Monsters vs. Aliens*) – have been considered to direct a *Jetsons* film. Even Robert Zemeckis (*Back to the Future*) explored a television revival in 2017, but that project didn’t move forward.
Remaking popular cartoons from the 1960s was a big trend in the 1990s and early 2000s. Some of these movies, like *The Flintstones*, *Casper*, *George of the Jungle*, and *Scooby-Doo!*, were successful. However, others, including *Mr. Magoo*, *Dudley Do-Right*, *Rocky and Bullwinkle*, *Underdog*, and the *Flintstones* prequel *Viva Rock Vegas*, didn’t do well in theaters. After *Yogi Bear* failed to impress audiences in 2010, studios seemed to lose interest in bringing these classic cartoons to life. Warner Bros., for example, cancelled a planned live-action *Hong Kong Phooey* movie that would have starred Eddie Murphy.
Jim Carrey is known for successfully playing characters originally created for animation. He recently gained a new following for his role as Dr. Robotnik in the *Sonic the Hedgehog* movies, building on his success with *How the Grinch Stole Christmas*. Now, Warner Bros. hopes Carrey’s broad appeal will make a *Jetsons* movie a big hit. The recent positive reaction to the retro-futuristic style of Marvel’s *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* – which many compared to *The Jetsons* – suggests there’s an audience eager to see *The Jetsons* brought to life on the big screen.
