Jim Acosta, a persistent CNN journalist known for challenging interviewees from his positions within the White House press room and newsroom studios, is preparing to depart from the network following a rearrangement of their scheduling that has taken away his anchoring roles during daylight hours.
It’s anticipated that Acosta will share the decision with viewers by the end of his program on Tuesday, as per a source close to the situation. CNN chose not to provide comments from their executives regarding this matter. The Status newsletter announced on Monday evening that Acosta has made a decision to part ways.
CNN was prepared to keep Acosta on their team, sources claim, but they wished to assign him to non-standard working hours: between midnight and 2 a.m., a timeslot that CNN has utilized before to replay its prime-time schedule for west coast viewers. The position was characterized as a chance to explore uncharted territory, providing breaking news to viewers in California and abroad, but it was also perceived as a strategy to sideline a seasoned correspondent who hasn’t shied away from challenging Trump administration officials out of CNN’s primary broadcast lineup.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Acosta is likely exploring independent projects where he can create content himself, potentially including a digital subscription service. This platform may showcase his interviews and accountability reporting. Given the current climate where numerous media companies seem to be trying to appease President Trump, who has historically taken legal action against entities like Paramount Global and Disney over coverage by CBS News and ABC News, Acosta’s offering could provide subscribers with content that they might find less accessible through traditional outlets.
Recently, Acosta shared a link to a fresh Substack-supported publication through Threads, which is one of Meta’s social media platforms.
Jennifer Rubin, a long-time Washington Post columnist, has chosen to embark on a fresh path as she establishes a new independent publication called The Contrarian. This venture, which carries the motto “Belonging to no one,” was born amidst a time when numerous journalists are experimenting with similar approaches. The Washington Post, under the ownership of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has been affected by the departures of key personnel following allegations that it has shown undue deference towards Trump. Rubin is collaborating on this project with Norm Eisen, a former White House ethics advisor.
Other journalists venturing into similar enterprises are Mehdi Hasan, previously of MSNBC’s opinion segment, who established Zeteo, Don Lemon, ex-anchor of CNN’s prime-time slot, who hosts an interview program accessible through digital platforms, Megyn Kelly, former anchor for Fox News and NBC News, who is prospering with a video podcast and SiriusXM broadcast, and Tucker Carlson, previously the host of Fox News’ prime-time show, who has launched his own digital media venture.
