As a movie buff with a soft spot for classic comedies, I have always held a deep appreciation for the brilliant minds behind some of the funniest films ever made. Jim Abrahams, who passed away at the ripe age of 80, was undoubtedly one of those minds. Born in Shorewood, Wisconsin, he embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on the comedy genre, collaborating with Jerry and David Zucker to create masterpieces like Airplane!, Top Secret!, and Hot Shots!.
Jim Abrahams, who frequently worked with Jerry and David Zucker, the team behind movies like “Airplane!”, “Top Secret!”, and “Hot Shots!”, passed away at the age of 80 due to natural causes. His son Joseph confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter on November 26th. Abrahams initially gained industry recognition by co-writing with his childhood friends, the Zucker brothers, for the sketch-heavy movie “The Kentucky Fried Movie” in 1977. This trio, often referred to as ‘ZAZ’, then went on to write and direct “Airplane!” in 1980, a hilarious spoof of disaster movies starring Leslie Nielsen that has become an American comedy staple. Throughout the years, Abrahams collaborated with the Zuckers on “Police Squad!”, “Top Secret!”, “Ruthless People”, and “The Naked Gun”. He later directed “Big Business” and wrote and directed the “Hot Shots!” films in 1991 and 1993. His most recent work was as a writer for “Scary Movie 4” in 2006.
1944 saw the birth of Abrahams in Shorewood, Wisconsin, to parents Louise and Norman Abrahams. From the start of his career, Abrahams demonstrated a keen sense for absurdist humor. Together with the Zuckers, he established the Kentucky Fried Theater in Madison in 1971, where their unique blend of improv comedy and film satire flourished. Abrahams shared his life with wife Nancy, and they had three children named Joseph, Jamie, and Charlie. In addition to their family bond, they co-founded the Charlie Foundation to aid in the fight against pediatric epilepsy.
In a 2016 interview with Vulture, he commented on the enduring impact of “Airplane!” by saying, “We can’t provide serious answers to such questions. The essence lies in not taking things too seriously.
