As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of film history under my belt, I can empathize with Jesse Eisenberg‘s sentiments about the impact of a poorly received role on one’s career. His portrayal of Lex Luthor in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” was undoubtedly a unique take on the iconic character, and it’s unfortunate that its public reception overshadowed his otherwise impressive body of work.
The initial sneak peek for James Gunn’s “Superman” unveiled the first glimpse of Nicholas Hoult portraying the malevolent character, Lex Luthor – a role that Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg previously embodied in Zack Snyder’s 2016 blockbuster “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” In a recent interview on the “Armchair Expert” podcast (as reported by The Playlist), Eisenberg discussed the drawbacks of his brief stint as Lex Luthor.
Eisenberg remarked that he was part of a Batman film which didn’t fare well, and his performance in the movie also received unfavorable responses. He admitted (for the first time) that this, being associated with such a widely-viewed project that wasn’t well-received, may have negatively impacted his career to some extent.
He has been involved in projects that didn’t get much recognition and often remain unknown to others. However, this particular instance was highly visible, and since he doesn’t usually follow reviews, news, or film criticism, he wasn’t aware of the negative reception it received.
Despite earning an impressive $874 million globally at the box office, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” faced harsh criticism from film critics and failed to win over fans of comic book movies. This unfavorable public response marked the start of a downward trend for Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, culminating in its collapse in 2017 with the underperforming “Justice League.
Earlier this year, Eisenberg shared with EbMaster that he relished playing Lex Luthor due to the sense of connection he felt with the role. He further explained, “It’s impossible not to feel connected when you’re immersed in any role or activity, whether it’s a movie production or something else.
When questioned about giving Hoult tips on portraying the Superman antagonist, Eisenberg humorously replied: “Don’t model yourself after me!
In previous interviews, Hoult mentioned that the “All-Star Superman” comic book was his inspiration for portraying Lex Luthor. He elaborated: “There’s a part in ‘All-Star Superman’ where it talks about his muscles being real and the hard work that goes into building them. I saw this as a bit of motivation, like fuel for my performance.
Fans of comic book movies can catch actor Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor when the film “Superman,” directed by Gunn, premieres in cinemas on July 11, distributed by Warner Bros.
