Jeremy Allen White to Star in Netflix Bisexual Romance Drama ‘Enigma Variations’ (EXCLUSIVE)

According to our exclusive information, Jeremy Allen White will both star in and produce a Netflix limited series based on André Aciman’s novel “Enigma Variations.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that a new project is brewing at the streaming platform. If all goes well, this will mark the second time one of Aciman’s novels gets brought to life on the big screen. Previously, his novel “Call Me by Your Name” was transformed into an award-winning film featuring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. James Ivory penned the script, while Luca Guadagnino took the director’s chair. The film garnered four Oscar nominations upon its release, with Ivory winning for best adapted screenplay.

As a passionate film aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be taking on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the intriguing series titled “Enigma Variations.” The esteemed Oliver Hermanus will direct and produce the project alongside me. André Aciman and White are set to executive produce, with Media Res joining us as producers too! This is shaping up to be an exciting venture!

Reps for Netflix declined to comment.

White will star as the main character, Paul. The official description of the novel states:

The “Enigma Variations” follows the life of a man named Paul, whose affectionate feelings from his youth persist as intensely in his maturity as they did earlier. Be it in southern Italy where he harbors a crush on their family’s cabinetmaker, or in a snowbound New England campus where his long-lasting affection for a girl he repeatedly encounters is marked by casual liaisons with strangers – whether he’s on a tennis court in Central Park or walking down a New York street in springtime. Paul’s connections are elusive, fleeting, and constantly tinged with raw desire. At every turn, Paul’s expectations, disappointments, anxieties, and regrets wait to ensnare him. Yet the dream of love persists. We may not always be aware of our desires. We may remain puzzles even to ourselves and others. But eventually, we come to understand who we truly are.

Currently, Jeremy White is a prominent figure on the popular FX show “The Bear,” earning him two Emmys and three Golden Globes thus far. The team is currently developing the fourth season of this series. In addition to his role in “The Bear,” White is widely recognized for portraying Philip “Lip” Gallagher throughout the entire 11-season run of “Shameless” on Showtime. His filmography includes titles like “The Iron Claw,” and upcoming projects such as the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me from Nowhere” and “The Mandalorian & Grogu.

He is repped by WME, Entertainment 360, and Hansen Jacobson.

Most recently, Shulman served as a writer and executive producer for the Amazon’s epic fantasy series “The Wheel of Time.” Previously, she has been involved in shows such as “Berlin Station,” “Tell Me Your Secrets,” “The Blacklist,” and “Chuck.” She is represented by UTA and Hansen Jacobson.

Hermanus is well-known for creating and directing movies such as “Shirley Adams,” “Beauty,” “The Endless River,” and “Moffie.” He also directed the movie “Living” with Bill Nighy in the lead role, and he’s currently overseeing several episodes of the Sky Atlantic-Starz series “Mary & George.” His representation includes LARK, UTA, and Granderson Des Rochers.

Media Res has now embarked on their second Netflix venture following recent announcements. Back in September 2024, it was made public that they were working on a corporate thriller series for streaming, titled “Thumblite,” with Rosamund Pike set to star. This project, having received a direct-to-series order, is currently underway. In addition, Media Res’ ongoing projects include “The Morning Show” and “Pachinko” for Apple TV+.
