Jennifer Love Hewitt to Return for New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Movie at Sony

As a cinephile with a penchant for ’90s nostalgia, I am overjoyed to learn that Jennifer Love Hewitt will reprise her iconic role as Julie James in “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Her return to the horror franchise is not only exciting but also heartening.

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt will be returning to play Julie James once more for the forthcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film at Sony, under the direction of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

In the recently announced ensemble, Hewitt is now included, joining Freddie Prinze Jr., who reprises his role in the horror franchise, alongside Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols and Gabbriette. Kaytin Robinson is directing this sequel, which she co-wrote with Sam Lansky, based on a draft by Leah McKendrick. Neal Moritz serves as the producer for this project.

Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18.

In a recent conversation with EbMaster, Hewitt expressed deep affection for the beloved role, as it carries significant meaning because “it was one of my earliest manifestations.

He mentioned that she is exceptionally important to him, as that movie significantly impacted his career. She altered his self-perception too. He expressed this, explaining that he initially auditioned for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s role but soon discovered Julie was a more suitable character. The realization that he could perceive future events and manipulate them, then share these visions with the universe, only to be rewarded in return, was a profound life lesson for him. This insight has been instrumental in his nearly 36 years of work so far.

Apart from expressing her delight, Hewitt also mentioned her immense gratitude towards the upcoming sequel. She said, “It’s a real privilege at 45 to be asked back. To be considered in this manner, not just discarded for fresher, younger versions, but instead given the opportunity to return and reprise my role is quite awesome.

At that moment, Hewitt’s agreement hadn’t been finalized yet, but she comforted fans by sharing that discussions regarding her part were moving forward in a favorable manner.

One of the main reasons we’ve paused for a moment is because I don’t want to merely say, ‘Here’s a fleeting glimpse of the ’90s spirit in the film,’ she clarified. Instead, I aim for her character to return, have a purpose, play a significant role, and allow viewers to witness her transformation over the past 27 years.” Hewitt humorously added, “I believe the most terrifying aspect of the movie might be people seeing me as 45, given they last saw me at 21.

Currently, Hewitt shares screen time on Fox’s series “9-1-1” and is set to appear in multiple roles, directing and serving as executive producer for the Lifetime movie titled “The Holiday Junkie.” In addition to this, her extensive television portfolio encompasses popular shows such as “Ghost Whisperer” and “The Client List,” where she garnered a Golden Globe nomination. Among her film credits are the romantic comedy “Heartbreakers” alongside Sigourney Weaver and the action comedy “The Tuxedo,” which features Jackie Chan.

Beyond her achievements in acting, producing, and directing, Hewitt also has a music career as a singer-songwriter. Her latest album, “BareNaked,” marked her first entry on the Billboard 200 in the U.S. Her debut novel, “The Day I Shot Cupid,” published in 2010, was a New York Times bestseller, and she recently released her second book, the memoir “Inheriting Magic.

Hewitt is represented by Vault Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman LLP.

Deadline was first to report news of Hewitt’s return.
