Despite not performing well in theaters, Bill Condon’s Kiss of the Spider Woman is getting a new chance with its upcoming digital release. The film, which stars Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and Tonatiuh, is a remake of the stage play and tells the story of two men imprisoned in Argentina during the 1980s. They find escape through storytelling, as one of them shares his love for a classic Hollywood musical.
Despite receiving generally positive reviews – earning a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes – the 2025 film Kiss of the Spider Woman didn’t attract enough moviegoers to be considered a box office success. Made with a budget of around $30 million, the musical drama only brought in under $2 million worldwide. Now, Lionsgate is counting on revenue from home viewings – rentals and purchases – to help recoup some of its costs.
Okay, movie fans, good news! You’ll be able to rent or buy Kiss of the Spider Woman on demand starting tomorrow, November 11th. While it doesn’t have a firm streaming date yet, I’m guessing it’ll do really well digitally. You know, the director, Condon, also did Chicago, which was a huge hit and won awards, so it’s a little surprising this musical didn’t get more love from the critics. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre!
Jennifer Lopez is a well-loved actor and musician, and audiences are particularly excited to see her in this dramatic role following her acclaimed performance in the 2019 film Hustlers. Diego Luna is also a seasoned actor, known for roles in films like Y tu mamá también and the series Narcos: Mexico, but recently gained wider recognition as the star of Andor.
While Kiss of the Spider Woman isn’t getting much awards attention anymore, its star, Tonatiuh, is still in the running for recognition. Many initially thought Jennifer Lopez would be the film’s strongest acting nominee, but Tonatiuh received a nomination for Breakthrough Performer at the 2026 Gotham Awards, putting him in competition with Chase Infiniti from One Battle After Another.
Despite not performing well in theaters, Kiss of the Spider Woman is still a film worth seeing, and might find a wider audience now. While it featured a popular cast, the movie’s story and mature rating likely hindered its box office success. Fortunately, the talented lead actors are poised to star in many future hits.
