As a movie reviewer who’s seen my fair share of films, I must say that Jennifer Lopez‘s journey in Hollywood is nothing short of extraordinary. Her latest project, “Unstoppable,” not only showcases her versatility as an actor but also highlights her ability to connect with characters on a deeply personal level.
Before the premiere of the wrestling film “Unstoppable” hits the streaming platforms, I, as an ardent movie enthusiast, had the privilege to attend a career-spanning conversation with Clayton Davis, Senior Awards Editor at EbMaster. In this engaging discussion presented by Amazon MGM Studios’ EbMaster Screening Series, Jennifer Lopez opened up about her journey portraying the mother of famous wrestler Anthony Robles, played by Jharrel Jerome. She also reflected on the movies from her career that have left the deepest imprints.
When Lopez first heard about the script, she loved that it was a Latino story.
Lopez added that he appreciated the film’s inspiration and its portrayal of intricate characters. Judy, in particular, was a highly inspiring figure. Anthony Robles is a champion, an extraordinary individual, and without his mother, he might not have been the person we see today.
In reflecting on my acting journey, I can’t help but recall some pivotal roles, such as the one in “Hustlers” where I danced as a stripper – a role that generated quite a stir and even earned recognition. However, if we go way back to 1997, it was the opportunity to play Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in “Selena” that truly stood out. From the moment I was offered this role, I knew it would be a significant responsibility – one I felt honored and humbled to shoulder.
She remarked, “Before that point, I wasn’t familiar with Selena’s music. I wasn’t particularly drawn to Spanish music either, so I didn’t know her. It was during her funeral and seeing all the people who attended that I wondered, ‘Wow, who is this?’ I only knew there had been a significant role for a young Latin girl as the main character in a film, but it turned out there never really was.
Much like Lopez found an emotional bond with her character in “Unstoppable,” it felt as if Selena and she shared the same passion as dancers at heart.
She expressed that she had comprehended her happiness,” she stated. “I’d observe her performing on stage, dancing freely, and it struck me as if she was simply expressing herself. There were no set routines or scripts – only an outpouring of joy through singing, dancing, and emotion. I didn’t realize at the moment that this would lead to me creating 10 or 11 albums. I was merely embarking on my acting journey.
Looking back at the movies I’ve been a part of throughout my career, I find a universal resonance in the finest tales told.
Regardless of where one hails from, what may appear as a sports tale on the surface is actually a heartwarming family saga at its core,” I’d say. “It delves deep into the relationship between a mother and her son, showcasing an unbreakable bond that shines brightly within.
