In 2026, audiences will get to see Katniss and Peeta return to the big screen in a new movie, Sunrise on the Reaping. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are confirmed to be back as their iconic characters.
Sources confirm both actors will be in the upcoming prequel movie, set to be released by Lionsgate on November 20, 2026. They will likely appear in a scene set in the future, but details about their characters haven’t been revealed yet. Francis Lawrence is directing, and this new film connects to both the 2023 prequel and the original 2012 film, The Hunger Games, which started the entire series.
Sunrise on the Reaping is set 24 years before the first Hunger Games movie and features a younger version of Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson. The story focuses on Haymitch’s experience in the 50th Hunger Games—also called the Second Quarter Quell—where the Capitol forced twice as many contestants to fight to the death.
This movie is the sixth installment in The Hunger Games series. The cast features Zada along with Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, and Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman. Mckenna Grace and Ben Wang are among the actors playing tributes from the districts.
Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to reprise their roles in the new prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. This will be their first time appearing in The Hunger Games universe in over ten years, following the release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015. That final installment saw Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen leading a rebellion against the Capitol and the ruthless President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) to free Panem.
Sunrise on the Reaping Recently Dropped Its First Teaser Trailer
Last month, a preview of the new Hunger Games prequel was released, giving fans a first glimpse of the upcoming story. The clip featured Glenn Close’s character and a younger Haymitch, and it highlighted a particularly harsh element of this new Hunger Games competition.
In a new clip, Glenn Close’s character, Drusilla, announces the Second Quarter Quell with the line, ‘Twice the number of tributes, twice the glory.’ Close recently suggested her character embodies everything you’d expect from someone in the Capitol. She joked that Drusilla’s appearance and champagne consumption might offer clues to her behavior, emphasizing, ‘She’s not a nice person.’
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters on Nov. 20, 2026.
