Jenna Ortega’s 2025 psychological thriller is now gaining popularity with viewers after initially failing to succeed in theaters. While the film didn’t receive positive reviews or attract many moviegoers when it was released, it’s now finding an audience on streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, the new movie Hurry Up Tomorrow, starring The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) and Jenna Ortega, is now the second most popular film on Starz in the US. It’s just behind The Knife at number one, which is impressive considering many critics didn’t like the film, but people are still watching it a lot.
Jenna Ortega is currently enjoying a surge in popularity thanks to recent streaming success. Her other horror movie from last year, Death of a Unicorn, is now the second most-watched film on HBO Max globally, showing that audiences are enthusiastically watching even if it didn’t perform well in theaters.
Trey Edward Shults directs this film, written with help from Reza Fahim and the musician it’s about. The story follows the artist as he battles physical and emotional challenges while on tour, potentially jeopardizing everything. Jenna Ortega co-stars as Anima, a dedicated fan who will do anything to meet her idol.
The movie Hurry Up Tomorrow includes appearances by Metro Boomin, Gaspard Augé, Xavier de Rosnay, and Belly, all playing fictionalized versions of themselves. Barry Keoghan portrays Tesfaye’s manager, Lee, and Paul L. Davis plays his head of security. Riley Keough also lends her voice to several unseen characters in the film.
When Hurry Up Tomorrow was released in May 2025, it received largely negative reviews, with many critics calling it a self-indulgent project for The Weeknd (Tesfaye). He described the film as being closely linked to his 2025 album of the same name. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a very low score of 14%, based on 91 reviews.
Despite receiving negative reviews, the movie has surprisingly become popular on streaming platforms. It’s been consistently ranked second since February 4th, showing that streaming gives a chance to all kinds of films, even those critics don’t like.
What Audiences (and The Weeknd) Think About Hurry Up Tomorrow
In contrast, audiences generally liked Hurry Up Tomorrow. While the movie only earned $7.8 million in theaters despite costing $15 million to make, it still has a 60% approval rating from users on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 500 reviews.
Before the movie came out, Tesfaye talked about Jenna’s performance, saying she added a lot of nuance to her character. He recalled one scene with his co-star, Trey, where they both wondered how a particularly unbelievable part of the script would actually work on film.
Tesfaye remembered Ortega stepping up to direct a scene, explaining, “She just said, ‘I have an idea,’ and took charge. The whole thing wasn’t planned or rehearsed, and honestly, a lot of my reactions weren’t acted – they were genuine responses to what she was doing.”
The actor had considered appearing in Sam Levinson’s poorly received series, The Idol. While that show didn’t last, the current popularity of Hurry Up Tomorrow on streaming platforms shows The Weeknd isn’t finished with acting just yet.
Hurry Up Tomorrow is currently available for streaming on Starz.
