Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Henry Cavill and Jack Black all want a Red Dead Redemption movie

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his role in The Walking Dead, is getting a lot of attention online after a video from a past fan event showed him enthusiastically volunteering to play Arthur Morgan in a potential Red Dead Redemption movie. He’s not the only actor hoping Rockstar Games will adapt their popular Western game for the big screen, though.

This clip is from a fan question-and-answer session from last year. When asked about playing the main character in Red Dead Redemption 2, Morgan immediately said he’d be up for it.

He explained that this was the project he really wanted to work on. He’s a huge fan of Westerns—it’s by far his favorite genre. Plus, his son loves the game it’s based on and thinks it’s fantastic. He’s so enthusiastic, he’d happily do the project even without getting paid.

He’s not the only one who wants to play Arthur, either.

Arthur Morgan himself wants in, too

Roger Clark, the actor who played Arthur Morgan, has expressed interest in reprising the role in a film or television adaptation. However, he acknowledges that making that happen is now more challenging.

As a big fan, I’ve noticed a ton of video game adaptations lately, and it really bugs me that Hollywood often ignores the actors who originally brought the characters to life through voice work and motion capture. It feels like a missed opportunity to keep that original magic!

He expressed disappointment that the original actors aren’t recognized or considered, even now.

Henry Cavill and Jack Black have pitched Red Dead as well

Both Henry Cavill and Jack Black have publicly expressed their support for a movie or show based on the video game Red Dead Redemption, though they haven’t specifically campaigned for the role of Arthur Morgan.

Henry Cavill recently began playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and is loving it, believing the game’s story would translate well into a film or TV show.

Jack Black echoed the sentiment, saying Rockstar’s titles are basically movies already.

He expressed surprise that none of the Rockstar Games have been adapted into movies yet, and he particularly feels that Red Dead Redemption would make a great film.

Why a Red Dead or GTA movie still seems unlikely

Even though many big stars are interested, a movie based on Red Dead Redemption or Grand Theft Auto isn’t likely to happen soon. Take-Two’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, explained the company is extremely careful about allowing its games to be adapted into movies, and the lukewarm response to the Borderlands film serves as a warning about the risks involved.

I was really surprised to hear that Dan Houser mentioned Hollywood had actually come to Rockstar wanting to make movies or shows based on GTA or Red Dead! Apparently, they turned down a lot of offers because Rockstar wasn’t willing to give up control of the creative process. They really want to make sure any adaptation stays true to their vision, which I totally respect.

Despite the willingness of actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Henry Cavill, Jack Black, and even the original voice of Arthur Morgan to participate, the final decision lies with Rockstar Games, and they currently have no plans to pursue a Hollywood adaptation.
