Netflix is nearing the end of a hugely popular run with just four episodes remaining in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. While the show’s massive audience wasn’t a shock, it’s surprising to see how much it’s boosted certain brands. For example, Eleven’s love for Eggo waffles has been a big win for the company, and the show has significantly increased interest in the game Dungeons & Dragons since its first season.
Recent data from Variety shows that the character Eleven’s fondness for Eggo waffles, which began in the first season of the show in 2016, has significantly benefited Kellogg’s, the company that makes them. Kellogg saw a 14% increase in sales during the last three months of 2017, and a further 9.4% increase in the first four months of 2018. This suggests that the popularity of Eggos soared around the time Season 2 was released on October 27, 2017, as fans stocked up both before and after watching. (Sales did decrease during the break between Seasons 2 and 3.) While Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, may not personally enjoy frozen waffles, it’s clear many other people do!
Capitalizing on the popularity of Stranger Things, the company released limited-edition Strawberry Eggo Waffles nationwide. Marketed as “Hawkins’ favorite toaster waffle,” the product playfully suggests they’re ideal for everything from bike rides to battling monsters. While the waffles haven’t appeared in the fifth season yet, the fictional quarantine in Hawkins doesn’t stop fans from buying them at their local grocery store.
Dungeons & Dragons has become incredibly popular again, largely thanks to the show Stranger Things. Netflix reported a 673% increase in interest in the game since Stranger Things first aired in 2016. Considering D&D has been a key part of the show from the beginning – with the characters often using monsters from the game to describe creatures in the Upside Down – it’s not surprising that it’s reached a wider audience in recent years.
Although the Dungeons & Dragons movie starring Chris Pine, released in 2023, and updates to the game itself likely played a role, the film’s poor performance at the box office means it won’t get a sequel. Interestingly, Dungeons & Dragons sets themed around the Hellfire Club are still readily available in stores like Target. (We’re still mourning the loss of Eddie Munson, and it seems Joe Quinn won’t be returning for the final season of Stranger Things.)
Kellogg’s and Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, face a challenge: with the main Stranger Things series ending, interest in products related to the show will likely decrease. While an animated spin-off is planned, it probably won’t create the same level of excitement as the original live-action series.
The final episodes of the series, releasing on Christmas Day with the last volume of Season 5 and concluding on New Year’s Eve, could significantly increase profits. While the characters will be busy battling Vecna, there might be a moment for El to recharge with her favorite Eggo waffles. You can watch the next three episodes starting December 25th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time with a Netflix subscription.
