Warning: minor SPOILERS for Jay Kelly are ahead!
With the year winding down, the 2025 film Jay Kelly, now streaming on Netflix, is getting a lot of attention. Critics are especially impressed with George Clooney’s portrayal of the main character, a well-known actor reflecting on his life and career during a trip through Europe. The movie also includes a funny subplot about cheesecake, which playfully references a real-life experience Clooney had with fuji apples.
George Clooney Accidentally Got Fuji Apples Added To His Rider
A running gag in the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back involves a request in George Clooney’s character’s rider for a slice of cheesecake to be available at every location. Even though Clooney’s character claims he doesn’t like cheesecake, Adam Sandler’s character, his manager, insists he once said he did, but simply forgot. When USA Today asked Clooney if he’d ever actually had a rider, he responded:
I recall being in New York when my driver was really upset with me. I asked him what the problem was, and he explained he’d been searching all over town for Fuji apples! Someone had asked me what I wanted in my dressing room, and I’d just said maybe some apples, suggesting Fuji because it was the first type that came to mind. Apparently, that request ended up in my contract rider, meaning people were going to great lengths to find them wherever I went. I immediately told them to remove it, explaining it was a ridiculous request.
The issue seems to stem from a simple misunderstanding. Apparently, George Clooney once mentioned he liked Fuji apples, and someone on his team mistakenly added them to his list of requests for events. While Clooney never said he disliked Fuji apples – unlike Jay Kelly’s dislike of cheesecake – both men agreed it was silly to have such specific demands in their riders. This means event organizers don’t actually need to bother finding those apples for him.
George Clooney Isn’t A Fan Of Extremely Specific Rider Requests
George Clooney is especially puzzled by the Fuji apple situation. He’s not known for making demanding requests in his contract riders, and actually doesn’t spend much time in his trailer. He shared that:
Sometimes, people go to ridiculous lengths trying to be accommodating. You even get actors with completely absurd demands, like only eating green M&M’s. Growing up in Kentucky, we were taught to avoid drama and keep things simple – I definitely didn’t want to be known as the guy living in a trailer on set. It’s not about the material possessions; it’s about maintaining a professional environment.
George Clooney has shown he can be surprisingly relatable. He frequently jokes about how bad his performance was in Batman & Robin, and he once rescheduled filming on Syriana so Matt Damon could watch the Red Sox in the World Series. While he has some preferences on set, he’s far from demanding like some actors who request specific things, such as only a certain color of M&M. Hopefully, his agent will manage to get rid of the requirement for cheesecake on set, because those slices should be enjoyed by people who really want them.
With Jay Kelly now out, everyone’s wondering what George Clooney will work on next. Many believe it will be Ocean’s 14, as Clooney mentioned Warner Bros. had greenlit the budget and filming could begin in roughly nine to ten months.
