Jason Statham’s Sci-Fi Action Movie ‘The One’ Still Deserves a Sequel

Jason Statham is a consistently popular action movie star, with recent films like The Beekeeper and his work in the Fast & Furious series keeping him in the spotlight. While known for action, he’s also shown versatility, trying comedy in Spy alongside Melissa McCarthy and facing off against a massive shark in Meg. Statham isn’t afraid to take risks with his action roles either, as fans of the Crank movies can attest – Chev Chelios’ wild adventures are unforgettable.

Jason Statham hasn’t done a lot of science fiction, but he’s chosen his roles carefully. He was in the dystopian action film Death Race, and John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars, where he fought zombie-like creatures on Mars. More recently, aside from his films with sharks, he played against a scientifically enhanced villain in Hobbs & Shaw.

Before becoming a major star, Jason Statham appeared in a little-known science fiction action film after gaining attention in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch. The movie boasted a strong cast, including Jet Li, Delroy Lindo, Dean Norris, and Carla Gugino, with some actors playing multiple characters. Interestingly, it explored the concept of a multiverse years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite having the potential to launch a series, The One unfortunately faded into obscurity.

Why Did ‘The One’ Never Get a Sequel?

Even now, the actors in The One are still well-known, with Jason Statham probably being the most famous. When the film came out, Jet Li was the biggest star, playing both the hero and the villain. The plot centers around Li’s villainous character jumping across different universes to eliminate his alternate selves, which makes the remaining versions of him more powerful. He eventually clashes with Gabe, the good version of Li, resulting in some exciting martial arts battles between the different versions of the character. Statham and Lindo play the agents who pursue him across these universes, trying to stop his dangerous scheme.

As a movie fan, I always thought The One was surprisingly forward-thinking. The special effects were really ambitious for their time, and while they don’t always hold up perfectly now, you have to give them credit. It’s cool the film actually made money too! Apparently, it cost around $49 million to produce – a decent amount, especially with all the effects and needing a popular lead actor. But it pulled in $79 million worldwide, so it turned a small profit, though marketing costs probably ate into that a bit. What’s interesting is that it really found a second life when DVDs became huge. The visuals were perfect for showing off those new players and TVs!

As a huge sci-fi fan, I always wondered why so many promising early 2000s movies never got sequels, and a big part of it was just…bad reviews. Take The One, for example. It looked amazing – seriously, the visuals and action were top-notch. But honestly, the story itself felt a little flat. They built this cool world and had interesting tech, but the characters didn’t really come alive, and that ending… a lot of people didn’t buy it. Critics definitely didn’t – it’s sitting at a pretty rough 13% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though audiences liked it a bit more, it still wasn’t enough to save it from being considered a flop.

Jason Statham hasn’t always received critical acclaim, but he’s built a dedicated following who love his action movies. Now might be the perfect time for him to try science fiction again, and he could be exactly what a revival of The One needs – whether as a sequel or a fresh start. Despite some initial poor reviews and years of being forgotten, The One has a lot of potential, and Statham’s career could benefit from revisiting the multiverse concept.
