Jason Ritter, whose wife Melanie Lynskey starred in The Last of Us, previously had a small, uncredited role as a clicker on the show. Now, both actors are returning for season 3 in larger roles! Ritter will play Hanley, a soldier with the Washington Liberation Front, while Patrick Wilson will portray Jerry, the father of Abby (Kaitlyn Deaver). Abby killed Joel (Pedro Pascal) in season 2 to avenge her father, and season 3 will focus on Ellie (Bella Ramsey) grappling with the consequences of that act and whether to continue the cycle of revenge. Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord have also been promoted to series regulars.
Production on the third season of The Last of Us – which might be the last – has been ongoing for some time. In May 2025, Ramsey stated they hadn’t read any scripts yet, but anticipate being involved, though perhaps not extensively. They’ve discussed the plans and have a general idea of the storyline, but are keeping the details private.
