Japanese woman goes viral spending $980 to “marry” cardboard cutout of Kazuma Kiryu

A picture of a woman in Japan seemingly marrying the video game character Kazuma Kiryu is gaining popularity online. However, the story behind the photo isn’t as strange as some people believe.

On December 9th, pictures started appearing on X (formerly Twitter) of a woman wearing a wedding dress and posing with a large cardboard cutout of the video game character Kazuma Kiryu.

A popular tweet, seen by almost a million people, playfully lamented that a woman in Japan had seemingly ‘married’ Kazuma Kiryu, a famous video game character. It jokingly asked how men could compete with such a legendary figure, known as the ‘Dragon of Dojima’.

Russian news source RT reported on a story about a 25-year-old Japanese woman who married a cardboard cutout of a video game character.

In Japan, a 25-year-old woman recently participated in a unique event: she ‘married’ a cardboard cutout of Kazuma Kiryu, a character from the popular Yakuza video game series. This was part of a contest held by Sega. This unusual event takes place as Japan continues to struggle with a declining birthrate.

She didn’t actually marry Kiryu in a legal ceremony. It was part of a promotion for the Like a Dragon game where fans can pay to have a fake wedding with their favorite character.

This event celebrates the 20th anniversary of the series, and Sega and RGG Studio are holding a big exhibition based on the theme of “The Four Ceremonies of Life.”

One special event is a mock wedding, and the creators went all out to make it feel like a real wedding venue. Inside, fans can take photos with life-sized panels of eleven popular characters, including Kiryu, Majima, Ichiban, and Seonhee, as if they’re getting married themselves.

Like a Dragon wedding ceremony explained

The event features an AR app that lets visitors make personalized photos with special character artwork created to celebrate the anniversary, as Automaton reported.

The popular photo making the rounds online came from a special upgrade offered at the event – the “Special Wedding Experience Package.” For $980 (or 150,000 yen), couples get a complete, mock wedding ceremony for their photos. The only catch? It doesn’t include an open bar, which is arguably the best part of a real wedding!

However, fans receive special treatment, including a private room, professional hair and makeup services, and a photographer. They can select an outfit – a gown or tuxedo – pose with the character of their choice, and have up to ten guests join their themed “wedding” celebration.

Everyone who participates receives a fun souvenir marriage certificate and divorce decree. These aren’t legally binding documents – they’re just for the experience! The event is popular, so only 15 people will be chosen to participate through a random drawing.

Event organizers justified the high cost, explaining that the package was designed to help fans make lasting memories celebrating the 20th anniversary.

The Four Ceremonies of Life exhibition will be held in Tokyo from November 28th to December 22nd, and then in Osaka from February 6th to February 24th.

Kiryu isn’t truly retiring from romance, but some lucky fans can get a special anniversary photo with him. And at $980, it’s much cheaper than a real wedding!
