Japanese Students Are Learning English By Playing PT

As a big fan of Silent Hills, I was so bummed when Konami cancelled the project and took down the playable teaser, P.T. It’s become legendary, even though it’s super hard to find now! But here’s a cool story: a teacher in Japan is actually using P.T. to help their students learn English. I think that’s a really creative way to use such a memorable game!

A teacher at Tsunan Secondary School in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, showed how they used the video game P.T. as a learning activity in class. Students played the game in English, and their classmates practiced English by giving advice and suggestions on what to do next.

A startlingly loud phone ringing in the game P.T. caught the attention of fifth-year students, who are around the age of high school sophomores. However, it’s a surprisingly effective way to learn a new language. It’s remarkable the game is still playable, given that it requires a PlayStation 4 console that downloaded the game before it was removed from availability.

As a huge fan, it was so disappointing when Konami cancelled Silent Hills, especially because it was going to be made by Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus! It felt like a dream team. Thankfully, Kojima didn’t let that stop him. He went on to create Death Stranding, and he brought both Reedus and del Toro along for the ride – Norman as a main character and Guillermo with a cool cameo. And now, we even have a sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which came out earlier this year! It’s not Silent Hills, but it’s still amazing to see them all working together again.

Hideo Kojima is developing a new horror game called OD, in collaboration with director Jordan Peele. Early trailers for OD strongly reminded fans of the cancelled game Silent Hills, particularly its playable teaser, P.T. Kojima even joked about potentially capturing a real ghost while scouting locations for the game. OD is being produced by Xbox Game Studio and Kojima Productions, and features the voices and likenesses of actors Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
