Japan’s government recently created a short, anime-style video game about bicycle safety, and it quickly gained popularity with 1.5 million views.
Japan implemented a new system on April 1st allowing police to immediately fine cyclists up to 12,000 yen for offenses like using their phones while riding, running red lights, or ignoring stop signs.
Traditional public service announcements weren’t getting through to people, so the Japanese government took a creative approach: they hired a famous voice actor from the Dragon Ball series to play three attractive police officers in their safety campaign.
Japan released an anime dating sim to teach bicycle safety
Doki Doki Cycling, a new series released on March 16th on the official government YouTube channel, features Hina Natsume as Bicycle Noruko. Noruko is incredibly unlucky – she can’t finish a bike ride without encountering a handsome police officer who stops her.
Interestingly, all three characters are voiced by Tsuyoshi Kusao, a well-known Japanese voice actor famous for roles like Trunks from Dragon Ball and Hanamichi Sakuragi from Slam Dunk. That’s a lot of talent for a video focusing on helmet laws!
Every time Noruko messes up, it plays out like a scene from a dating sim. An officer appears, often with cherry blossoms falling around them, and delivers a stern lecture that feels surprisingly like a romantic confession.
The rules highlighted vary from being obvious to actually helpful. For example, cyclists in Japan are required to ride on the left side of the road. The video presents this as a charming discovery, but it’s simply a logical rule – in countries where cars drive on the left, riding on the right makes it harder for drivers to see you.
The video got 1.5 million views, but the comments on the X post showed a common pattern: people enjoyed the video itself, while also urging for more dedicated bike lanes and better enforcement of existing rules.
