Today marks the beginning of the Oscars voting process, and two-time Oscar winner Jane Campion is advocating for emerging Italian director Maura Delpero’s “Vermiglio.” This film represents Italy’s submission in the international category for this year’s Oscars.
The heartfelt period drama, set towards the end of World War II in an Alpine village and revolving around the arrival of a soldier, who disrupts the relationships among three sisters, has recently catapulted Delpero into the limelight as a fresh sensation on the international indie scene. The film “Vermiglio” clinched the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in September.
Delpero’s second movie transitioned from its premiere at Venice to screenings in Toronto and numerous other film festivals worldwide. The director had earlier gained attention with “Maternal”, a film set in an Argentinean home for teenage mothers, operated by nuns.
After debuting at Venice, Delpero’s second movie was shown at various film festivals around the world, including Toronto. The director had already made headlines with “Maternal”, a story about a home for teenage mothers in Argentina, run by nuns.
The colorful “Vermiglio” product, previously popularized by Venice, made its U.S. debut on December 25th, courtesy of Sideshow and Janus Films.

“This is the full text of Campion’s praise for ‘Vermiglio’, which EbMaster got exclusively.
The charm of “Vermiglio” has captivated me completely. I have an undeniable fondness for linen fabrics, rustic yet sturdy furniture, snowy landscapes, and fresh cow’s milk – the themes that “Vermiglio” delves into resonate deeply with me. Moreover, I hold immense respect for Maura Delpero’s exceptional directional skills in handling a story of such grandeur with such poise and maturity. Throughout my viewing experience, I found myself fully immersed in this world, feeling both captivated and engaged.
Initially, I anticipated the narrative to portray an idyllic, old-fashioned charm; however, it unfolded as a tale that mirrored the ups and downs of real life, including love, heartache, death, and betrayal. All these aspects intrigued me, and I developed a profound trust in Delpero’s ability to portray the raw reality of life and its true dramatic essence.
“Vermiglio” is a gift.
It’s evident that the production of this film was nothing short of a monumental task; battling harsh weather conditions, filming in freezing cold and snowy landscapes where one has to be mindful of crew footprints disrupting fresh snowfall. Additionally, managing such a vast ensemble cast, including numerous children, all seemingly comfortable and relaxed around each other is no small feat. This level of harmony on set is not easy to achieve. The entire crew, D.P. Mikhail Krichman, and actors all delivered exceptional performances.
It’s hard not to be curious about what Delpero will create next. Her resilience, talent, and the stunning work displayed in “Vermiglio” truly impress me – I’m definitely a fan!
