Production company Protagonist Pictures, along with Augenschein Sales, will take charge of global distribution for Jan-Ole Gerster’s thriller “Islands.” Starring Sam Riley (“Control,” “Firebrand”), Stacy Martin (“The Brutalist,” “Nymphomaniac”) and Jack Farthing (“The Riot Club,” “Spencer”), the film will make its debut at the Berlinale, featured in the Berlinale Special Gala section.
Gerster’s first English work, ‘Islands’, was jointly written with Blaz Kutin and Lawrie Doran. This is Gerster’s third feature film, following ‘A Coffee in Berlin’ (2012) and ‘Lara’ (2019). The production of this movie was handled by Maximilian Leo and Jonas Katzenstein under Augenschein Filmproduktion. Alongside Leonine Studios and Schiwago Film, it is a co-production. Leonine will also be responsible for distributing the film within Germany.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m absolutely ecstatic about this gripping suspense film! At its heart is Sam Riley’s mesmerizing acting, skillfully directed by Jan Ole Gerster. This masterpiece delves into the enigmatic realms of desire and secretiveness, all set against a radiant, sun-kissed landscape. I can’t wait to share this captivating perspective with potential buyers, and it’s an added pleasure to collaborate once more with our trusted partners at Augenschein.
Filmed on location at the Canary Islands, this gripping suspense story revolves around Tom (character played by Riley), who spends his days as a tennis instructor at a resort hotel on Fuerteventura. Initially, the perpetual summer seems like a dream. However, over time, it has transformed into a mundane routine for the ex-pro. The constant influx of tourists brings a sense of transience, and Tom tries to fill his emptiness with brief romances and excessive drinking.
As I sat down to pen my thoughts on this intriguing cinematic journey, I found myself compelled to delve into the enigmatic world of Anne, a stranger who checked into our hotel. Accompanied by her husband Dave and their young son Anton, they were far from the typical vacationing family.
I soon found myself drawn to this peculiar trio, but as Dave vanished without a trace and Anne’s actions grew increasingly enigmatic, I found myself unwittingly entangled in a chilling tale of murder. This unconventional thriller took me on an unexpected journey, leaving me both captivated and on edge.
