I was surprised to hear that James Cameron might not direct Avatar 4! Apparently, the guy who created The Conjuring is potentially interested in taking over the franchise. Just when Avatar: Fire and Ash hit theaters – it’s the third movie in Cameron’s amazing Avatar series – I found out he’s not 100% committed to the next two films. It’s a bit worrying, but at least someone with a knack for great filmmaking is potentially stepping in!
However, the director has other projects he wants to work on, including a new Terminator film.
James Wan has expressed interest in directing a future Avatar film if James Cameron decides to move on. Speaking with Liam Crowley of ScreenRant for The Copenhagen Test, Wan shared that Avatar is one of the few major franchises he hasn’t directed yet, and he’d be excited to have the opportunity.
I haven’t worked on Avatar yet. If you could provide a good version featuring James Cameron, I’d be very interested in trying.
If James Cameron were to stop directing the Avatar films, it would be a significant change. He’s been heavily involved in all parts of making the first three movies, and his dedication has clearly been successful – the first two films have earned over $2.9 billion and $2.3 billion worldwide, respectively.
After just two weeks in cinemas, Avatar: Fire and Ash is quickly approaching $1 billion in earnings.
The future of the Avatar movies is uncertain. Disney has dates set for Avatar 4 (December 21, 2029) and Avatar 5 (December 19, 2031), but those plans might shift. Director James Cameron is also interested in working on other projects, like a new Terminator film.
If James Cameron chooses to leave the director’s chair, another filmmaker could take over, as he’s mentioned it’s a possibility, despite already shooting parts of Avatar 4.
Wan is now considering co-directing with Cameron. He’s no stranger to big franchises, having previously worked on films like Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Fast & Furious, and Aquaman within the DC Extended Universe.
As a huge movie fan, it’s amazing to look at some of these numbers! The Conjuring films, for example, have made a staggering $2.8 billion worldwide – making it the most successful horror series of all time. And it’s not just horror; Saw has earned over a billion dollars, and both Aquaman and Furious 7 each broke the billion-dollar mark too. It really shows how popular certain franchises can become!
Wan is a highly successful director, ranking among industry giants like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, the Russo Brothers, Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, and Ridley Scott. He’s also currently producing the upcoming Peacock thriller, The Copenhagen Test, which stars Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera.
James Wan, the creator of The Conjuring, is producing several upcoming movies, including a sequel to Mortal Kombat, a new installment in the Insidious franchise called The Bleeding World, and a fresh Paranormal Activity film.
As a huge fan, I’m really curious to see what James Cameron has planned for the future of Avatar. There’s talk that Wan might direct Avatar 4, and honestly, I think that would be fantastic – he’s incredibly talented. But the big question, the really big one – worth about $2 billion, if you ask me – is whether Cameron would actually be willing to let someone else take over directing such a personal project.
