After actor James Van Der Beek sadly passed away, a GoFundMe campaign created in his memory quickly reached $1 million in just one day. The campaign is now expected to surpass its goal of $1.5 million.
James Van Der Beek passed away yesterday, February 11th, at the age of 48, after a fight with colorectal cancer.
The actor gained fame for his role as Dawson Leery on the TV show Dawson’s Creek. He also appeared in films like Varsity Blue, Texas Rangers, and The Rules of Attraction, and had roles on the television series Pose, CSI Cyber, and Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23.
Following his death, a GoFundMe was created that’s well on the way to surpassing its new target.
GoFundMe created to support James Van Der Beek’s family

Despite being a very successful and busy actor with big projects like the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel, James Van Der Beek faced unexpectedly high medical bills that wiped out his savings, forcing his family to rely on financial assistance.
So, a GoFundMe page was created to help his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. The page explained:
I was really bummed to hear about James Van Der Beek passing away. He seemed like such a great guy – a loving husband, awesome dad to his six kids, and just a really good person all around. He fought cancer for a long time, but sadly he lost the battle on February 11, 2026. My heart goes out to his wife, Kimberly, and the whole family.
During James’s illness, his family struggled with both the emotional toll and the high cost of his care, doing everything they could to support him.

After James’s passing, Kimberly and their children are now facing a difficult and uncertain future. The significant expenses of his cancer treatment have unfortunately left the family with no savings.
This family is doing everything they can to keep their home and make sure their children can continue learning and feel secure, despite facing a very challenging situation. Help from friends, family, and the community would be incredibly valuable as they work through this difficult time.
Your kindness will directly help Kimberly and her family with everyday costs like bills and their children’s schooling. Any amount you can give will make a real difference as they work to get back on their feet and find stability. We appreciate your support.
As of earlier today, February 12th, the GoFundMe campaign had already exceeded its initial goal of $1.3 million and has since been increased to $1.5 million. Almost 30,000 people have contributed so far.
