James Tolkan, Back to the Future’s Mr. Strickland, Dead at 94

James Tolkan, the actor known for playing the strict commander in Top Gun and the stern Vice Principal in the Back to the Future movies, has passed away at the age of 94. According to a family representative who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, he died on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York.

Born in Calumet, Michigan in 1931, George Tolkan joined the Navy after graduating high school. He moved to New York City in 1956 with just $75 and began studying acting at the Actors Studio under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg. Tolkan’s early work included television appearances and Broadway roles, such as an episode of Naked City and as an understudy for Robert Duvall in the first Broadway production of Wait Until Dark. He eventually took over the role of Harry Roat in Wait Until Dark, but Alan Arkin played the part in the 1967 film version. Later, in 1984, Tolkan performed as Dave Moss in the Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross, a role later played by Ed Harris in the 1992 film.

James Tolkan is best known for playing various members of the Strickland family in the Back to the Future movies. He famously scolded Marty McFly as Mr. Strickland in the first and second films, and even played his own ancestor in the third installment. Fans often playfully asked Tolkan to scold them for being lazy whenever they met him. Beyond Back to the Future, Tolkan had notable roles in films like Top Gun as Tom “Stinger” Jardian, and he appeared in three movies directed by Sidney Lumet: Serpico (as a police officer), Prince of the City (as a district attorney), and Family Business (as a judge).

I remember hearing how my husband, Tolkan, met Parmelee back in 1971 while they were both working on the off-Broadway show Pinkville. She was incredibly talented with props, and he, of course, was the actor. It was a whirlwind romance – they fell in love and got married that same year in beautiful Lake Placid, and they were happily married until he passed away. It was a true love story.
