He also had roles in the TV series The Wire (as Ziggy Sobotka) and Generation Kill. Following his recent passing, many of his former co-workers have shared their memories and paid tribute to him.
I was so sad to hear about the passing of James Ransone. Spike Lee shared on Instagram that they worked together on ‘Red Hook Summer’ and ‘Inside Man,’ and it’s clear they were close. It’s a real loss for everyone who enjoyed his work.
Scott Derrickson, the director who worked with Ransone on films like Sinister, Sinister 2, The Black Phone, and the upcoming The Black Phone 2, shared his grief on Instagram. He described Ransone’s death as a devastating loss, praising his memorable performances in their five collaborations and expressing how much he will be missed.
James Ransone cause of death

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s office has determined that actor Clifton Ransone died by suicide at his home. The official cause of death was hanging.
Although Jamie McPhee’s husband passed away on Friday, December 19th, the news wasn’t made public until Sunday evening. McPhee shared a touching photo of them together on Instagram, along with a heartfelt message about her loss.
I’ve told you countless times how much I love you, and I know that love will continue. You once said we both needed to be more ourselves, and you were absolutely right. I’m so grateful for the wonderful gifts you’ve given me: you, Jack, and Violet. Our love will last forever.
Following the news, many colleagues and fans shared tributes online. Wendell Pierce, a co-star from The Wire, posted on X, expressing his sadness at not being able to be there for James Ransone and offering his condolences. Award-winning director Sean Baker, who collaborated with Ransone on the films Starlet and Tangerine, simply wrote that he would miss his friend dearly.

Just before he died, Ransone wrote online about the challenges he had dealing with childhood trauma. He revealed he was sexually abused as a child, which caused him to develop unhealthy ways of coping. These patterns became even harder to manage after he became a father to his two daughters.
Becoming a father was a deeply revealing experience for me. It forced me to confront parts of myself I’d been avoiding and honestly assess who I was. I realized I wanted to be a role model for my child, and that desire brought up feelings of shame I didn’t realize I still carried, according to Ransone.
In 2020, Ransone reported the abuse to the Baltimore County Police, who looked into his claims. However, no one was arrested as a result of the investigation.
