James Patterson Rejected Seven-Figure Offer to Make Alex Cross a White Man; ‘Cross’ Star Aldis Hodge Is ‘Shocked, Impressed and Proud of That’

As a fan of Aldis Hodge and his remarkable journey in Hollywood, I find myself deeply moved by his words regarding the character Alex Cross. His dedication to carrying this role with grace, dignity, and respect for its cultural significance is truly inspiring. In an industry where representation matters more than ever, it’s heartening to see a talent like Hodge embrace such roles with the responsibility they deserve.

Actor Aldis Hodge shared with Buzzfeed that he was taken aback upon learning that author James Patterson declined a substantial offer to transform his Alex Cross book character into a white man when initially pitching the first novel. Now, Hodge portrays this character in Prime Video’s adaptation of Patterson’s Alex Cross series books.

Hodge expressed a mix of astonishment, admiration, and pride about Patterson’s disclosure. He considers taking on roles of authority or representation as an honor and a duty. He feels humbled by being given these opportunities and wants to handle them appropriately.

Hodge additionally acknowledged Ben Watkins, the showrunner of “Cross”, for highlighting and appreciating various aspects and dimensions of the African-American community in unique and infrequently explored ways within the series.

The actor commented, ‘He shaped the very essence of the performance.’ I’m honored to work with a team that shares my beliefs, particularly in portraying our culture authentically. Wearing his role is another chance for me to challenge stereotypes, showcase the reality of who we are, and contribute to breaking down barriers, expanding opportunities. That’s what this role signifies for me.

On November 14th, all eight episodes of “Cross” were released simultaneously. Amazon Prime Video recently announced that approximately 40 million viewers tuned in to watch “Cross” within its first 20 days of streaming, placing it third in terms of viewership for season premieres in 2024, following the debuts of “Fallout” Season 1 and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2.

Back in November, I had a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, and they proposed a substantial sum to transform Alex Cross into a Caucasian character. But let me tell you, no amount of money could convince me to alter the essence of this character. When they made their offer, I simply replied, “Thanks, but no thanks.” It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was necessary to stay true to the spirit of Alex Cross. After all, he isn’t a white man; he’s the character I created, and that’s who he will always be for me.

Prime Video’s “Cross” has already been renewed for Season 2. The first season is now streaming.
