As a history enthusiast who has always been captivated by the tales of medieval England, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming series “King and Conqueror.” James Norton, with his versatile acting skills, is perfectly cast as Harold, Earl of Wessex. Having spent six months in Iceland, covered in mud, he embodies the grit and determination that such a role demands.
In the initial peek at the upcoming medieval drama series “King and Conqueror,” it appears that James Norton is preparing to safeguard the Anglo-Saxon throne against the French adversary Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
In the series, Norton embodies Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, as he readies himself to clash with Coster-Waldau’s William, the Duke of Normandy, in the historic Battle of Hastings.
Also starring are Emily Beecham as Edith Swan-neck and Clémence Poésy as Matilda.
The pictures depict Harold, smack dab in the midst of a battlefield, commanding an army and donned head to toe in armor. Norton described the six-month filming in Iceland as “grimy” and “chaotic,” stating he was caked in mud for half a year.
The logline reads, “The story ‘King and Conqueror’ recounts a historic confrontation that shaped the course of a nation and an entire continent for a millennium. This clash can be traced back decades and is woven through two interconnected royal families vying for power across two nations and a tumultuous sea. Initially allies, Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were unexpectedly thrust into a war over the British crown. Despite having no initial ambitions for the throne, they found themselves compelled by unforeseen circumstances and personal desires to engage in this battle for royal possession.
Originally cast as William, Norton ended up playing Harold instead, due to contract obligations tied to his work on Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi show “The Nevers,” another series he was filming.
HBO made it clear that you are allowed to direct “King and Conquer”, given your executive producer role in its development. However, if the show is successful enough for a second season, you would need to step away from acting in it due to contractual obligations, as you are still optioned for “The Nevers”. This was communicated during Content London on Wednesday.
In the end, Nikolai’s portrayal of Harold deeply resonated with him. As Norton put it, “Nikolai is perfect for William, and I believe he would agree. The character development I experienced with Harold was extraordinary, and I believe he felt the same about William.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that I’m diving into an intriguing eight-episode series, penned by none other than Michael Robert Johnson. The curtain will be lifted on this epic journey by Baltasar Kormákur, who brought the heart-pounding adventure of “Everest” to life. I’m eagerly awaiting the first episode!
The program is set to debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the United Kingdom next year. International distribution rights have been entrusted to Paramount Global Content Distribution.
The series titled ‘King and Conqueror’ is a joint production of The Development Partnership, Rabbit Track Pictures, Shepherd Content, RVK Studios, and CBS Studios, along with the BBC.
