As a movie buff with a knack for recalling the behind-the-scenes stories of my favorite stars, I find James Marsden‘s tale of his “Saturday Night Live” audition both amusing and slightly tragic. The image of him and his friend clucking like chickens during their audition is a hilarious mental picture that will forever be etched in the annals of SNL lore.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must confess that despite landing a guest spot on “30 Rock” for James Marsden, he missed out on becoming a permanent cast member at the studio. This was unfortunately due to his less-than-stellar performance during his audition for “Saturday Night Live.

On a recent episode of “Live with Kelly and Mark” (December 18), the actor from “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” revealed that he had once tried out for a famous comedy show, but was turned down because he couldn’t meet the expectations set by the talent scouts after not following their instructions.

Marsden mentioned that they held a nationwide talent hunt, and a companion of mine from our drama class proposed, ‘Why don’t we try out for this?’ During the audition, they asked us to develop an intriguing character. It was more like, ‘Feel free to be as absurd as you want.’ I can’t quite recall why we decided on this, but we ended up mimicking chickens and circling each other.

In hindsight, Marsden admitted that “it was a bad choice” committing to the chicken bit.

As a die-hard film fan, I can’t help but express my heartfelt wish: one day, I aspire to grace the stage as the host of Saturday Night Live (SNL). Reminiscing on the past, there was an instance where I shared this dream with my 30 Rock co-star and SNL legend, Tina Fey.

Marsden shared that he worked on “30 Rock” together with Tina Fey. He mentioned his long-held dream of being a part of Saturday Night Live, to which she responded, “Oh, you’ll host at some point.” But he clarified, “No, I want to be one of the regular cast members.” She replied, “Well, you probably can if you want to.” He added that he enjoys doing impressions and playing various characters.

This weekend, I’m thrilled to be part of the excitement as “Saturday Night Live” kicks off its golden 50th season on our screens. On this special occasion, it’s a pleasure to share that Martin Short, a beloved ex-cast member, will be gracing us with his presence as host, and Hozier has been announced as the musical guest for the evening. Can’t wait!
