Is James Mangold truly directing Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi? Recent news suggests there’s uncertainty surrounding Lucasfilm’s film about the origins of the Jedi.
I’m really excited to hear that James Mangold has signed a big deal with Paramount Pictures! He’s going to be developing, directing, and producing films for them, which is fantastic news for his career. But, honestly, it also has some interesting consequences for Lucasfilm. You see, last year they announced he was going to be the creative lead on Dawn of the Jedi, a Star Wars project that promised to delve into the very beginnings of the Force. It’s a bit of a shift, and I’m curious to see how this all plays out.

As James Mangold’s schedule at Paramount becomes fuller, people are starting to wonder: will the Dawn of the Jedi movie ever actually be made, or is it going to be another Lucasfilm project that gets announced with a lot of hype but ultimately never comes to fruition?
Mangold’s Rocky Lucasfilm History
Even before discussing Dawn of the Jedi, it’s important to recall that James Mangold previously caused a significant setback for Lucasfilm. He directed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny in 2023, intended as a fitting farewell for Harrison Ford. However, the film performed poorly in theaters, unfortunately becoming known as one of Lucasfilm’s biggest commercial failures.

For a lot of fans, Dial of Destiny really highlighted how uncertain Lucasfilm’s decisions had become with Kathleen Kennedy leading the way. Giving Mangold another huge project-this time exploring the very beginnings of the Jedi Order-was already a risky move. Now, with his new deal at Paramount, it seems even less probable that the project will succeed.
A Familiar Pattern for Lucasfilm
For more than ten years, Lucasfilm has become known for revealing exciting Star Wars projects that ultimately don’t happen. Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was initially promoted with a big teaser and publicity, but was later cancelled. Kevin Feige’s planned movie never got off the ground. Rian Johnson’s promised trilogy? It’s nowhere in sight. Taika Waititi’s movie has moved from being “in development” to a running joke. Even the film starring Daisy Ridley, often referred to as the “Rey Movie,” hasn’t gained any traction and has been met with silence.

It always happens the same way: a director is revealed, creating news, but then nothing comes of it. Disney doesn’t officially cancel these projects; they just quietly disappear.
Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi increasingly looks like it could be the next casualty.
The Paramount Deal and What It Means
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Mangold’s recent agreement casts doubt on at least two of his other projects-his Star Warsfilm with Lucasfilm and the Swamp Thingmovie planned for DC Studios. The publication was direct, stating that he was actively working on these projects, suggesting that his priorities might be changing now that he’s moved forward with a new deal.

According to THR, Mangold was working on a Star Wars film called Dawn of the Jedi, which would have delved into the history of the Force. He was also creating a horror movie for DC Studios featuring the character Swamp Thing.
Just that fact is concerning. Lucasfilm has often allowed directors to move on from projects without officially acknowledging their cancellation. The way major industry publications are now talking about Mangold’s Star Wars work – using past tense – seems like a warning sign that the project might be in trouble.
The “Still Alive” Spin
I was reading over at Gizmodo, and Germain Lussier shared that James Mangold’s representative has stated he “remains attached and available to develop all his other projects.” That’s good news for fans hoping to see his takes on both Star Wars and Swamp Thing! However, it’s worth noting that this doesn’t actually confirm either movie is currently being made. It could easily be interpreted as Mangold’s representative saying he’s ready and willing, but the studios haven’t contacted him yet. It’s a bit of a waiting game, it seems.
I checked with a spokesperson for James Mangold, and they assured me that even with the new agreement, he continues to be involved and free to work on his other projects.
Star Wars and Swamp Thing are still as alive as they previously were.

Lussier continued the conversation on X, stating that Star Wars and Swamp Thing “are still as relevant and popular as they always have been.”
However, that explanation itself is concerning. Claiming these movies are “as alive as they previously were” doesn’t offer much confidence. If these projects weren’t actively being worked on to begin with, then remaining “as alive” could easily mean they’re effectively stalled. It feels less like a solid promise and more like a public relations effort-a tactic to keep the options open without making any real commitments.
Lucasfilm’s Vanishing Projects
The real issue isn’t about Mangold-it’s with Lucasfilm as a whole. Since Kathleen Kennedy took charge, Lucasfilm has gained a reputation for projects that start with a lot of hype but don’t always come to fruition. They announce things to get people excited, but their schedule of actual movies and shows remains surprisingly limited. Beyond the shows on Disney+, the studio has only released a few films in theaters since Disney acquired it, and those have faced many delays, changes, and even outright cancellations.

If Dawn of the Jedi is ultimately cancelled, it will be just another example of Lucasfilm failing to deliver on what it’s promised. Fans are familiar with this pattern-they’ve witnessed similar projects fall through, though not in cinemas.
Final Thoughts
James Mangold’s deal with Paramount doesn’t necessarily mean the end of Dawn of the Jedi, but it definitely makes the project seem less likely to happen. Considering the disappointing performance of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it’s difficult to see Lucasfilm relying on Mangold to bring Star Wars back to success in theaters.

Based on past patterns, Lucasfilm is unlikely to formally cancel the movie. Instead, they’ll likely cease all public discussion about it, and simply move forward with other projects, leaving fans to speculate about what might have happened.
At this point, the silence from Lucasfilm speaks louder than any announcement ever could.
