DC Studios head James Gunn recently shared something that has DC fans buzzing online. Because he’s in charge of such a major franchise, every action Gunn takes is closely watched and analyzed by fans worldwide. He can’t casually post anything without it being seen as a hint about future DC projects.
Generally, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has handled fan discussions pretty well. He occasionally participates, confirming or debunking theories. However, he usually does so clearly, which makes his recent, confusing post stand out.
James Gunn, head of DC Studios, recently posted a surfing emoji on Threads, sparking a lot of online discussion about what it might hint at for the future of the DC Universe. He didn’t offer any explanation with the post, leaving fans to speculate.
This post has gotten fans very excited and speculating about what the DC executive might be hinting at with just an emoji.
It’s possible the director of Superman was just announcing a surfing trip. However, given the recent release of the Supergirl trailer, that would seem insensitive or poorly timed.
Fans immediately wondered if this was a first look at a future Aquaman project within the DC Universe. One user admitted they didn’t think it was a direct hint, but still had a feeling it might be related to Aquaman, while another simply asked, “Aquaman???” with excitement.
Fans following Gunn also proposed DC characters like Waverider, Black Racer, and Lagoon Boy as possibilities. Some playfully suggested it could be a hint about Batman, referencing the character’s well-known comic book storylines that include surfing.
What Is Gunn Teasing With His Surfer Emoji Post?

James Gunn is very deliberate with what he posts on Threads. As head of DC Studios, he usually explains his posts, so it’s unusual for him to share something without context.
The surfer emoji is sparking a lot of debate online, with people interpreting it in many different ways. Some have jokingly suggested it represents Green Lantern, pointing to the green surfboard in the image. While rumors of a Lanterns trailer are circulating, it’s probably not true.
It’s no surprise Aquaman is the first name that comes up when discussing DC and underwater heroes. Most fans immediately think of Arthur Curry. However, an announcement about a new Aquaman project seems premature at this stage for the DC Universe.
James Gunn is still building the foundation for his new DC Universe. While Superman has already been released and Supergirl is coming soon, major characters like Batman haven’t even appeared yet in this reimagining of the franchise. Gunn has explained how his version of Aquaman will be different from previous ones, but there’s been no news about what’s next for the character within the DCU.
What seems most likley is that this is actually in reference to a former version of Aquaman.
With the first trailer for Supergirl coming soon, rumors are circulating that Jason Momoa – known for playing Aquaman in the previous DC films – might appear as the villain Lobo. This would mark his first appearance in the new DC Universe.
This could be James Gunn hinting at the actor’s comeback to the DC Universe in the upcoming Supergirl trailer, which will be released online shortly.
