While it’s still unclear when the Justice League will officially appear in the new DC Universe, James Gunn has a plan to reintroduce the team in 2026. The Justice League was most recently featured in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and the new DC Universe is navigating the challenges left behind by the previous DC movie franchise.
The 2021 film released on HBO Max was Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of the 2017 Justice League movie. Snyder had originally planned sequels, but those are now unlikely to happen. With the end of the DC Extended Universe and James Gunn’s decision to reboot the DC universe, the future of Justice League movies has become more complicated.
James Gunn’s DC Universe Has A Justice League Problem
Despite mixed reactions to many DC movies, fans generally liked the actors in the Justice League film. This became evident when Henry Cavill was replaced as Superman by David Corenswet. Although Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman was well-received, Cavill’s departure caused significant debate among fans. Ultimately, the new Superman movie directed by Gunn didn’t perform as well financially worldwide as the earlier film, Man of Steel.
It appears that none of the actors who played the Justice League in the DCEU will reprise their roles in the new DCU. This means James Gunn’s DC franchise will likely face similar criticism to what happened when Henry Cavill was replaced, but this time it won’t involve Gal Gadot or Ben Affleck losing their roles as Wonder Woman and Batman.
The new DC Universe (DCU) needs to move past the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which means finding new actors to play beloved heroes and helping audiences connect with them. Because the DCEU movies weren’t universally loved, any recasting will be controversial. Luckily, a 2026 release date gives them time to handle this carefully.
A 2026 Movie Actively Fixes The DC Universe’s Justice League Problem
When Henry Cavill was replaced as Superman, it caused a lot of debate, and completely abandoning the original Justice League cast could create similar problems for the new DC Universe as it’s getting started. That’s why the decision to bring back Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman, in the 2026 Supergirl movie is a smart move. It shows James Gunn is willing to work with actors from the previous Justice League films.
Supergirl’s introduction connects the DC Universe and its previous iterations. Importantly, this allows Jason Momoa to move from playing Aquaman to a role that might be a better fit: Lobo, the DC Universe’s tough, intergalactic bounty hunter. This casting choice suggests DC doesn’t plan to recast the Justice League heroes and that the original actors will continue in their roles.
