James Gunn’s DC Reboot Just Unveiled the 7th DCU Superhero Who Can Fly

The DC Universe (DCU) is adding another flying superhero – its seventh – in a project planned for 2026, alongside established characters like Superman and Supergirl. 2025 is a big year for DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, as the new Superman film starring David Corenswet will finally launch the franchise in theaters. Along with this arrival, the DCU will feature several heroes and villains with the power of flight, including Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, and Mr. Terrific.

With the new DC Universe set to launch in 2026, more details are emerging about its heroes. At an HBO Max event in Brazil in November 2025, a trailer for the upcoming series Lanterns revealed that Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) will be able to fly. This makes him the eighth character in the DCU with the power of flight.

Hal Jordan flies because of a power ring he wears. The ring is powered by his willpower and automatically gives him the ability to fly – it’s a standard feature for anyone using a Green Lantern ring. Without the ring, Hal can’t fly on his own; he relies entirely on its power.

Now that John Stewart is joining the Green Lantern Corps, he’ll likely gain the power of flight when he receives his power ring.

Every Main DCU Character Who Can Fly

Superman

Superman can fly because of his alien body and the energy he gets from Earth’s sun. This combination lets him overcome gravity and move through the air quickly.

The 2025 Superman movie stays true to the classic DC Comics stories. A key visual element is how Superman, played by David Corenswet, flies – it’s depicted in a way that resembles the movements of a jet fighter in many important scenes.

Supergirl

Like Superman, Supergirl is naturally able to fly because of her Kryptonian background. The upcoming Supergirl movie in 2026 needs to clarify if Kara Zor-El can still fly when near a red sun, particularly since the ending of Superman showed her having fun and socializing in places with red suns.

In DC Comics, Kara loses her ability to fly when she’s under a red sun. This is because red suns take away all of her powers, which is also why she becomes weak and disoriented. She needs the energy from a yellow sun to regain her full flying strength.

Guy Gardner

As a huge cinema fan, I was really excited to see Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman. Like Hal Jordan, the power ring he uses lets him fly – it was a standout moment, honestly, and a great addition to the film!

Hawkgirl

It’s pretty obvious why Hawkgirl can fly – she’s a winged warrior in the DC Universe.

Her ability to fly isn’t just a natural talent; it likely stems from her alien biology. Director Gunn revealed in February 2025 that Kendra Saunders’ wings are actually grown, not artificial.

Mr. Terrific

Mr. Terrific can’t fly on his own, but he’s incredibly smart. He used his intelligence to invent T-spheres, devices that let him fly and move quickly during fights.

Metamorpho

Metamorpho can change his body into any element or compound, giving him incredible control over how he moves. We see this ability in action during a thrilling escape in a Superman story, where he, his son Joey, Krypto the Superdog, and Superman all try to get out of a strange, confined space.

Bonus: Blue Dragon

The second season of Peacemaker featured a version of Auggie Smith from another universe. In this alternate reality, where Nazis won, Auggie was a celebrated hero known as Blue Dragon.

He can fly because of the high-tech armor he wears. This suit has a jetpack and thrusters built in, giving him the power to take to the skies.

Bonus: Peacemaker

The Peacemaker we first met in the DC Universe couldn’t fly. However, the version from a different timeline – specifically, from a world where the Nazis won the war, as seen in Season 2 of Peacemakercan fly. This is because his costume has been upgraded with technology similar to that found in Blue Dragon’s armor.

Bonus: Captain Triumph

Like Peacemaker and Blue Dragon, Captain Triumph (Christopher Smith’s brother) has a suit with a built-in flying system, and he’s clearly a skilled pilot – he even manages to take apart a helicopter mid-flight in a memorable scene from Season 2.
