James Gunn’s 3-Part HBO Max Superman Series Officially Returns Next Week After Months-Long Wait

After a four-month break, the animated series Krypto Saves the Day! is returning to HBO Max next week!

I’m really enjoying this new animated series! It’s a continuation of the story from James Gunn’s Superman movie coming out in 2025, and it focuses on Krypto the Superdog. He gets into all sorts of fun, lighthearted adventures around Metropolis. So far, we’ve seen episodes like “School Bus Scuffle” (released in August 2025), “Halloween Havoc” (October 2025), and “Package Pandemonium” (November 2025), and I’m excited to hear they’re planning even more episodes for 2026!

Warner Bros. Discovery has revealed that the animated short Krypto Saves the Day: Coastal Catastrophe will premiere on HBO Max on April 18th. This marks the first new installment in the series since November 2025.

Ryan Kramer wrote and directed Krypto Saves the Day!, with James Gunn as an executive producer. The cartoon features Krypto, Superman’s super-powered dog, and his adventures in Metropolis. These fun stories include solving a candy emergency, building a snowman, and rescuing a spring break cruise ship.

I’m really loving how each part of the show is built around a different season! We just finished the Halloween episode, and before that it was all about winter. Now I’m excited because the next one is going to be focused on summer – it’s a great way to keep things fresh and interesting.

Is Krypto Saves The Day! Canon To The DCU?

Following its release in August 2025, James Gunn clarified that the animated series Krypto Saves the Day! isn’t part of the official DC Universe (DCU) storyline for films and TV shows. Despite this, the shorts continue the story from Gunn’s Superman movie (2025), which first brought Krypto into the DCU.

As a huge DC fan, I was thrilled to see Superman pop up in these shorts! It’s actually his second animated appearance in the DC Universe so far – he briefly showed up in an episode of Creature Commandos called “Chasing Squirrels” earlier this year, in 2024.

Krypto Saves The Day! Ramps Up Anticipation For Supergirl This Summer

A special summer episode of Krypto Saves the Day! will premiere on April 18th, building excitement for the upcoming Supergirl movie, set to release on June 26th. Krypto, who was first seen in James Gunn’s Superman film (coming in 2025), is actually Supergirl’s (played by Mily Alcock) dog – a reveal made at the end of that movie.

This summer, a new Supergirl movie will be released, following Kara Zor-El on a galactic adventure with her dog, Krypto, as she turns 23.
