He’s now spoken about the upcoming sale of Warner Bros. Discovery to and how it will affect the DC Universe and his future involvement. While the deal isn’t official yet, it’s very likely to go through, and this merger of two major companies will significantly impact many popular franchises, including DCU.
A lot of Zack Snyder fans are hoping this merger will bring back Snyder’s vision for DC and even cancel James Gunn’s plans for a new DC Universe – something they’ve wanted for a long time. However, it’s unlikely much will change right away for DC’s future. Gunn has faced similar situations before, so he’s responding to the merger with the calm and optimistic attitude everyone would expect. He recently shared his thoughts on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, saying:
I don’t really have any expectations, since the future is uncertain. Honestly, I find it all quite thrilling, and I’m hoping for a positive outcome.
James Gunn also shared a word of caution, saying he’s learned from past experiences that things aren’t always as they seem. He expressed optimism about the changes happening at DC, saying he believes every possible direction holds exciting potential and he’s eager to see what the future holds.
James Gunn’s DCU Faces a Challenging 2026 & 2027

Warner Bros.
Although Superman did reasonably well last summer, James Gunn and Peter Safran still face significant hurdles in building a successful DC Universe to compete with Marvel. Even though Marvel has experienced some recent difficulties – with 2025 being a pivotal year for both critical and financial outcomes – Superman’s performance wasn’t quite the blockbuster it needed to be.
Everyone was anticipating big things from Superman, as it was the first standalone movie starring the character since 2013 and the first film released under the new DC Universe leadership. However, the movie earned $616 million in theaters, which was less than the $670 million made by Man of Steel. This raises questions about whether it will truly serve as a strong starting point for the new DCU.

The next movies planned for the DC Universe include Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as the title character, where she’ll face off against Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Following that will be a surprising horror film, Clayface, and then, in 2027, Man of Tomorrow. How well these three films perform, along with James Gunn’s choice for the new Batman, will likely determine the future direction of the franchise.
